Job Summary

This is a teaching position in PPL’s Diploma Connect program . This unique program guides participants through the MN Standard Adult High School Diploma requirements and collaborates with the PPL Career Readiness department for access to job placements, career pathways, paid training, financial literacy, and apprenticeships for young adults. This program serves participants ages 19+ who have not graduated from high school and prefer a diploma over a GED. This role will require an educator who is rooted in community and led by student voice to achieve real results with participants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Learner-Centered Educator

  • Ensure participants are engaged in every element of their goals, planning, and education.
  •  Excel at 1:1 participant communication via multiple means: in-person, virtual, phone, and text.
  •  Demonstrate ability to teach all levels of middle school and high school math in individual or small group settings, including Number Sense, Geometry, Algebra, and Data & Statistics.
  •  Demonstrate ability to help participants with various coursework, including areas within Social Studies, Science, Language Arts, and Career Readiness.
  • Demonstrate patience and creativity with learners returning to school after periods of absence.
  •  Analyze experiences and opportunities to assess internal and external credit opportunities aligned with Minnesota Career and College Readiness state standards.
  • Plan curriculum that addresses privilege and systems, particularly as it relates to race, class, gender, and sexuality.
  • Exercise clear communication and maintain appropriate boundaries with participants.
  • Learn from the work and participant experiences to pivot and grow towards new results.

Flexible and Team-Oriented

  • Display interest and ability to be part of a team working to develop a new program.
  • Work closely with the Lead Teacher to coordinate curriculum planning, grading, and participant communication.
  • Help develop and implement appropriate program structures, policies, and procedures, as well as academic and life-skills activities that recognize participants’ achievements.
  • Collaborate with Career Readiness staff to embed secondary standards into existing and new Career Pathways and Financial Literacy curriculum.
  • Collaborate with internal PPL teams (Employment & Training, LEAP, Education) to benefit the participants in Diploma Connect.
  • Collaborate with coworkers and young people to set goals and pilot new ways to achieve results that have meaning for the participants and their loved ones.
  • Provide and incorporate feedback on work plans to meet team goals.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders in the community to encourage opportunities for program participants and strengthen referrals to the Reengagement Center.

Attention to Details

  • Maintain appropriate data across multiple systems where necessary.
  • Ensure secure data practices.
  • Provide data and narratives to inform grant applications and funding, when applicable.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No supervisory responsibility.

Minimum Requirements:

  • State of Minnesota Teaching Licensure for secondary grades, or equivalent life experience.
  • Substantial experience working directly with young adults from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Substantial experience working with young adults who have experienced many barriers, including systems involvement.
  • Training and experience in online learning, team teaching, project-based, experiential, and/or competency-based education.
  • Experience working with MN high school standards and credit recovery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensure in Math or Special Education preferred.
  • Experience in alternative high schools or GED settings.
  • Experience developing online curriculum and working with multiple learning management systems, with D2L/Brightspace experience a plus.
  • Experience with young adult career- and college-readiness programs, such as dual enrollment, career credentials, Jobs for America’s Graduates and/or working with adults to transition to postsecondary education or careers.
  • Experience with the postsecondary application process, career training, youth development

Hours and Scheduling

The position is a 1.0 FTE salaried, Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. Monday – Thursday takes place in person, with a possible work-from-home option on Fridays. PPL offers half-day Fridays every week between Labor Day and Memorial Day. Hours may include some evening and weekend availability based on participant needs, but all time outside the hours listed will be compensated for through flex time.

Salary/Wage: $48,000-53,000.00/Yr., DOQ
