Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

A school district near Lewistown, PA, is seeking a skilled Educational Interpreter (ASL) to provide 1:1 support for a kindergarten student who is fully deaf and uses cochlear implants. This contract position runs through the next school year and is based in an elementary school about 20 minutes from Penn State University and one hour outside of Harrisburg.

The student has some prior sign language experience from preschool early intervention and will benefit from consistent munication support as they transition into the elementary setting. Another interpreter is already onsite working with a 2nd-grade student and will be available for collaboration and assistance as needed.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing accurate and effective 1:1 sign language interpretation for the kindergarten student
  • Facilitating munication between the student, teachers, and peers to support academic and social engagement
  • Collaborating with onsite language professionals and educational staff to ensure continuity of services
  • Adapting munication strategies to the students needs, incorporating knowledge of cochlear implants and early intervention background

Qualifications:

  • Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) with experience interpreting in educational settings
  • Experience working with young children, particularly in grades K-5
  • Familiarity with munication strategies for deaf students using cochlear implants is highly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with educators and support staff effectively

This role is fully onsite and offers a pay range of $35-$45 per hour, with prehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan, and weekly pay.
