Job Title: Quality Control Engineer
Type: Permanent / Direct-Hire
Location: Thornton, IL (Onsite)
Working Hours: M-F 6:00 am to 2:30 pm Flex winter hours to 7:30 am start.
TOP SKILLS: Quality control experience, laboratory testing and data analysis experience, open to different backgrounds like chemical manufacturing, food and beverage manufacturing, etc.
Summary:
- Leading in accord with the mission, vision, and values of the Client's Corporation the QC Engineer will support the QC Manager in conducting various administrative duties, Aggregate and Hot Mix QC laboratory testing, and fill the role of backup QC Manager when the QC Manager is unavailable.
- Core Operations include coordinating all plant, lab, and field QC activities, testing, data analysis, and reporting, monitoring the performance of produced and raw materials, and continuous development of best practices. Common materials include Hot Mix Asphalt and Portland Cement Concrete, Mix Aggregates, as well as various recycled products.
- This position must always remain updated on the current published Manual of Test Procedures for Materials, Project Procedures Guide (PPG), and the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction regarding The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois Tollway and The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).
- The candidate must be highly motivated and is expected to have good communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as possess good organizational skills and a willingness to take on new challenges. Must be available after hours for planning regularly. Extended, night and weekend hours are occasionally required as related to current construction project schedules.
Essential Functions – The Core Responsibilities of this job:
Operational Excellence
- Conduct laboratory testing of HMA, RAP, and Aggregate at QC labs
- Set and monitor product standards, examining samples of raw products or directing testing during processing, to ensure finished products are of prescribed quality
- Participate and learn essential functions of the HMA QC Manager, as requested
- Support QC Manager in product and equipment evaluation including trials with agency support and internal record-keeping
- Assist in reviewing operations and confer with technical or administrative staff to resolve production or processing problems
- Conduct investigative inquiries on new lab equipment and procedures to streamline lab operations
- Assist in reviewing process schedules or production orders to make decisions concerning inventory requirements, staffing requirements, work procedures, or duty assignments, considering budgetary limitations and time constraints
- Audit job plans and retail orders for correct mix codes on future schedules
- Audit Lastrada records and plant records for mix-blend accuracy
- Assistance estimating team in material selection before bidding on new projects
- Project Specification review and interpretation
Communication
- General assistance for the QC Manager (i.e. - Review schedules, maintain QC KPI metrics data, verify completion and accuracy of testing records, help with communication needs to industry and other QC team members).
- Support process mapping for all QC activities and recommend areas for streamlining procedures. Establish and start HMA blends, by inputting current product info for final review and adjustment by QC Manager
- Work in conjunction with the CTL Quality Control team and field techs, Project Management, Construction teams, Plant, and Ready-mix sales to ensure understanding between all parties
- Promote, maintain, and improve open lines of internal and external communication
Compliance
- Maintain current knowledge of the quality control field, relying on current literature about materials use, technological advances, or statistical studies
- Coordinate all client's-produced HMA and RAP, and incoming materials to ensure project materials specification requirements are met
- Coordinate with the QC Manager and Plant Operations Manager for yearly plant calibrations and ongoing verification of control limits throughout the season
- Verify lab and plant start-up procedures are being executed and documented
- Catalog all plant mix blends, and in collaboration with CTL, prepare blends for bidding
- Coordinate or recommend procedures for facility or equipment maintenance or modification, including the replacement of machines
- Support the compilation of QC Plans for Projects
- Maintain appropriate levels of training including, but not limited to, IDOT certification
Reporting
- Track project tonnages and test results in real-time, to support best practices during PWL jobs
- Create and maintain procedures for laboratory reporting and document storage including document review and official signature
- Standardize processes and review annually
- Prepare and maintain production reports or personnel records
- Manage data collection, mix records, performance results for all materials (raw & produced), and communication of results.
- Develop or implement production tracking or quality control systems, analyzing production, quality control, maintenance, or other operational reports to detect production problems
- Support in sending reports to IDOT, Consultants, internal company
Safety
- Support in always maintaining a clean and organized laboratory
- Work with the QC Manager and Safety Director annually to identify improvement/focus area
- Hold toolbox talks and safety huddles with staff
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by following and enforcing industry standards and procedures, following legal regulations
Requirements:
- Education : Bachelor’s degree in Materials Testing, Engineering, or Science
- Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record
- The following certifications are required for the role, but can be obtained within 1st year on the job:
- IDOT Quality Management Training Program Certification in Asphalt, Aggregates, and Portland Cement Concrete

Pluses
- Experience in quality control within the asphalt or construction industry
