Department Bio The Antibiotic Resistance Action Center (ARAC) is focused on uncovering the origins and drivers of antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms, as well as quantifying the drug-resistant human infections arising from antibiotic overuse in agriculture. Students hired for this position will help facilitate these goals by providing in-person support to our laboratory team.
Position Specific Summary The successful candidate will have experience with microbiological research (including both culture-based and molecular methods), will be organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently and with a team, and must be able to manage his/her time across multiple projects.
Tasks include:
- Culturing E. coli and other environmental pathogens along with performing antimicrobial susceptibility assays.
- Conduct laboratory research according to protocols, including sample processing and molecular analyses including PCR and real-time PCR.
- Develop and implement new research protocols with guidance from the PI, for research methods on bench-top and on liquid-handling robots.
- Prepare common laboratory reagents and media.
- Participate in general laboratory activities, such as inventory, equipment maintenance, and laboratory clean-up.
- Compile data, enter data into databases, and perform preliminary data analysis under supervision of PI.
- Perform literature reviews and topic searches.
- General management and organization of the laboratory, inventory and reordering of laboratory equipment and reagents.
The Laboratory Research Assistant will be supervised day-to-day by the laboratory manager but will work closely with the PI (Dr. Lance Price) and other members of the research team.
Standard Position Description The student will perform basic administrative and research tasks under the guidance of a faculty member or research coordinator. Tasks may include: assisting with experiments, coding, data entry, and data cleaning, preparing research/documents for articles, reports, and/or presentations. Students may also help provide information for literature reviews, draft summaries, and create graphs and figures. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental/faculty needs.

Required Qualifications This is an entry level position, little to no experience required, all training will be provided (Students working in an instructional capacity should be very familiar with the subject area in which they are working).
Preferred Qualifications - 0-1 years of lab experience in microbiological research

- Strong communication & organizational skills
- Self-motivated, able to multi-task, set priorities, work independently, & manage deadlines
- Bachelor's in a science/health-related field
