Job Description
An Over-the-Road (OTR) CDL Truck Driver is a professional who operates a commercial vehicle to transport goods over long distances, often spanning multiple states. This job is a critical part of the national supply chain and requires a unique set of skills and a specific lifestyle.
Responsibilities:
Transport and Delivery: Safely and efficiently transport freight over long distances, ensuring timely delivery. This may involve hooking and unhooking trailers, securing and unsecuring freight, and tarping and un-tarping loads, especially with flatbeds.
Vehicle Maintenance and Inspection: Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle is in safe working order. This includes checking lights, signals, tires, brakes, and fluid levels. Drivers are responsible for reporting any defects or necessary repairs to company personnel.
Compliance and Documentation: Adhere to all federal and state regulations, including Department of Transportation (DOT) and Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Maintain accurate and detailed records, such as logbooks (often electronic), delivery receipts, and other required paperwork.
Route Planning and Navigation: Plan routes to ensure timely and efficient delivery, accounting for traffic, weather, and road restrictions. This often involves using truck-specific GPS systems and other navigational tools.
Communication: Maintain clear and consistent communication with dispatchers, customers, and other team members to provide updates on travel status and address any issues or delays.
Loading and Unloading: Depending on the job, drivers may be responsible for loading, unloading, and organizing freight. This can require physical labor, including lifting, pulling, and carrying heavy objects.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL): A valid Class A CDL is mandatory. Must not have automatic transmission restrictions.
TWIC card required or must have the ability to get card in a timely manner
Tanker endorsement is preferred but not required or willing to get certified.
Experience: We require a minimum of 2 years of previous tractor-trailer driving experience.
Knowledge of Regulations: A comprehensive understanding of all applicable DOT and safety regulations is essential.
Driving Proficiency: Excellent driving skills, including the ability to maneuver a large vehicle in various conditions and tight spaces, with strong hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. Some mechanical knowledge (i.e. changing lights or light duty repairs) Preferred not required
Time Management: The ability to manage driving hours, plan rest periods, and meet deadlines while adhering to Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
Physical Stamina: The job can be physically demanding, requiring the ability to be away from home for extended periods, remain alert for long hours, and perform tasks like squatting, crouching, and lifting freight.
Problem-Solving and Adaptability: The ability to think quickly and make sound, safety-focused decisions in response to unexpected challenges like mechanical issues, traffic, or weather delays.
Clean Driving Record: A good driving record is a standard requirement.
Background and Medical Checks: The ability to pass a background check and a required DOT physical, including drug and alcohol screenings.
