Job Description Summary


Located within the Libraries & Learning Commons, the Academic Success Center (ASC) provides academic support across all majors and disciplines with the goal of helping students become engaged, self-sufficient learners who are confident in their abilities to reach their academic goals. ASC services include one-on-one consultations, peer-assisted learning groups, and academic skills workshops. Libraries & Learning Commons Tutors work collaboratively with students to help them explore course material and develop a strategy for learning key concepts.

Specific Duties

  1. Conduct face-to-face, online, asynchronous, and/or drop-in tutoring sessions on assigned subject area(s) with students both individually and in groups, helping students develop their own best practices for becoming self-sufficient learners.
  2. Review resources available through the ASC, Wilson Library, and all of Libraries & Learning Commons, referring students to resource materials or staff members based on their individual needs and ability levels.
  3. Gather and report accurate data for each student and/or consultation.
  4. Attend and actively participate in all mandatory trainings and meetings, including fall and spring orientation; weekly small group meetings; online tutoring and technology training workshops; and other relevant trainings required for specific subjects or focus areas (e.g. group facilitation methods for those offering group sessions, research strategies for those offering research support, etc.)
  5. Complete supplemental ASC and Libraries & Learning Commons activities, including review, edit and/or create resources for the ASC, ASC class visits, reflections, observations, mentoring, and co-tutoring sessions, as assigned by ASC professional staff.
  6. Other duties as assigned by the Director, Associate Director and ASC professional staff.


Minimum Qualifications

  1. A strong academic background (minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.25
  2. Ability to communicate effectively to help students construct their own understandings of course materials.
  3. Ability to listen to the needs of students and work cooperatively in setting realistic and productive learning goals.
  4. Sensitivity to the diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds of ASC students.
  5. Dependability and personal accountability.
  6. Self-motivation, self-regulation, and a desire to mature and learn in a professional teaching/learning environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  1. Ability to apply growth learning, self-regulated learning, scaffolding, metacognition, and similar learning strategies in tutoring practice.


Benefits Summary


Employees are eligible for the following benefits:

One hour of Paid Sick Leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of 24 hours of Paid Sick Leave per year and capped at 48 hours.

University of La Verne Defined Contribution Retirement Plan - can contribute employee voluntary contributions, excluding wages derived from federal work study funds.

In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week, will be eligible for medical coverage through the University of La Verne.

Covered under the University of La Verne Workers Compensation Insurance.
