Job Description

Water Treatment Plant Operator

Coho Technology Solutions is seeking a Water Treatment Plant Operator to maintain constant observation and monitoring of operating conditions, meters, and gauges and provide observation for defects in the system. In the event problems arise, the Water Treatment Operator either repairs malfunctions or notifies the supervisor

Responsibilities

  • Shall have knowledge of prescribed tests and chemicals to test and treat water, such as ammonia or chlorine, to disinfect water or other liquids
  • Periodically make rounds of the water treatment plant to visually inspect equipment to see that is operating properly
  • Record meter and gauge readings and operational data
  • Maintain logs, records, and other plant data as required
  • Maintain log of plant equipment and clean and maintain equipment, tanks, filter beds, and other work areas
  • Collect samples of water and sewage, performs prescribed tests, and determines amount of chemicals for treatment of water and sewage chemical concentrations
  • Document and report test results to regulatory agencies
  • Operate numerous auxiliary equipment to pump, purify and clarify water or to process or dispose of sewage
  • Follow U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations
  • Ensure safety standards are met and attentive to safety procedures because of hazardous conditions, such as slippery walkways, the presence of dangerous gases, and malfunctioning equipment
  • Operators are trained in emergency management procedures and use safety equipment to protect their health, as well as that of the public
  • Follow standard emergency procedures until trouble can be corrected
  • Perform routine operational maintenance
  • Start, stop, and adjust equipment
  • Shall have knowledge of the location and function of all equipment controls, meters and gauges in the plant, and experienced skill to determine appropriate action to meet significantly complex demands
  • Knowledge of drawings and circuit diagrams of the plant and auxiliary equipment to quickly locate defects in the system and perform minor repairs
  • Comprehensive knowledge of maintenance requirements and the procedures or adjustments required controlling pollutants
  • Independently plans and carries out the work in accordance with established operating methods and procedures
  • Making complex determinations due to the amounts of water provided by the water treatment plant.
  • Work shall be checked through occasional observation for adherence to operating techniques and established procedures.

Education

  • Water Treatment Plant operators must have a minimum of a current Commonwealth of VA Class II Water Treatment Plant Operator license.
  • At a minimum, a record of completion for the OSHA 10-hour Construction Training Course is required.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to apply data to formulas that determine treatment requirements, flow levels, and concentration levels.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of repair, installation, assembly and troubleshooting of water treatment plant systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and guidelines used in water treatment plant operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise dexterity and safety in using tools and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform preventive maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate, repair, and maintain equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in difficult to access and confined areas in and around industrial equipment and support equipment, i.e., pumps, water heaters, fans, Unfired Pressure Vessels (UPVs), etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform work that includes moderate to strenuous physical effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing over 40 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in areas that is subjected to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes, and exposed to unpleasant odors.

Position Pay Range

$38 - $40 USD
