Description

TRIO Upward Bound (UB) and TRIO Math Science Upward Bound (MSUB) are federal grant funded programs at Monterey Peninsula College designed to assist first generation and/or income eligible high school students in preparing for college. The programs provide access to higher education through academic support and experiential activities such as after-school tutorial, academic enrichment workshops, counseling, college visits. It is the goal of both programs to support students in becoming engaged life-long learners, active leaders in their communities, and citizens of good character. TRIO is committed to providing guidance and support to ensure that students are able to meet and exceed their academic, personal, and professional goals.

Example of Duties
SUBJECT AREAS: English, Math, Science, History/Geography, Spanish (High School)

POSITION SUMMARY : Tutors provide academic support in one or more of the above listed subject areas in the TRIO Learning Center (TLC) at Monterey Peninsula College. Tutors enrich program participant's academic experience by empowering TRIO students to succeed in their high school courses. To assist students in the learning process, tutors must have:

A desire to work with high school students from diverse backgrounds and abilities
A strong commitment to helping students learn and the ability to effectively teach/explain concepts
Knowledge of study strategies and how to use them effectively
Willingness to attend meetings and professional development throughout the semester and/or academic year
Willingness to stay up to date on subject area knowledge and content
Patience and a positive attitude that encourage a supportive learning environment
demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to and appreciation for, the academic, ethnic, socio-economic, disability and gender diversity of students and staff attending or working on a community college campus.
RESPONSIBILITIES : Tutors are responsible for providing academic support in individual and group settings to Upward Bound/MSUB participants during after-school hours at MPC. This includes but is not limited to: instructional support, explaining concepts, providing study strategies, exam preparation, homework assistance, creating study plans, and supporting student success. Tutors help maintain the organization and cleanliness of the TLC. Tutors are expected to actively engage students, be positive role models, and ensure a safe and supportive learning space for all students.

Proof of Vaccination

New employees may begin working in their assignments only after the district has received proof that the person is fully vaccinated or an exemption has been approved.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS :
Currently enrolled college student (enrolled in a minimum of 6 units) in good academic standing or completion of college
Have a strong understanding and grasp of subject content in one or more of the above high school subject areas. Received letter grades of a "B" or higher in the applicable course(s)/subject areas
Understanding and sensitivity to the needs of underrepresented students
Experience working with students in an educational or after-school setting/tutor experience strongly desired

Work Schedule / Supplemental Information
WORK SCHEDULE : Work hours will be arranged before the semester begins and will require a minimum of 5 hours a week.

A number of other institutions cooperate with Monterey Peninsula College in serving the postsecondary education demands of the Monterey Peninsula. The College also enjoys a collaborative relationship with the Monterey County Business Council and the Monterey County Workforce Investment Board.

MPC is partnering with Monterey Peninsula Unified School District and Pacific Grove Unified School District to offer college level coursework in both academic and vocational tracks through its College and Career Access Pathways. MPC and CSU, Monterey Bay have collaborated in enrolling students in cohort-based programs in which students take classes at both MPC and CSU, Monterey Bay while earning a CSU, Monterey Bay degree.
