Canby High School is hiring a full-time counselor for the 2022-23 school year. The School Counselor implements a comprehensive school counseling program to ensure equitable access to a rigorous education for all students. As a professional educator with a mental health perspective, the counselor understands and responds to the needs of a diverse student population. The school counselor identifies the knowledge and skills all students will acquire as a result of the K-12 school counseling program, based on data-driven decision making. The school counselor provides proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support the students’ social emotional development, academic achievement and career preparation. This is based off of a 200 day contract. Salary listed is based on the 2021-2022 salary schedule.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide students with a planned and sequential school counseling program; assist students in transitioning between grades and school levels.
  • Provide academic development support to students, parents and other stakeholders with information about district and community educational resources.
  • Participate in scheduling students for classes to assure academic and personal needs are met; recommend and support interventions for at-risk students; arrange for class changes and class balancing; collaborate with Special Education, ELL case managers and others to support students with special needs.
  • Understand how learners grow and develop, recognizing variations within and across cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional and physical areas, and diversity of cultures and communities; implement and insure a developmentally appropriate, challenging and high-standards learning environment.
  • Promote, plan, implement prevention programs, career/college activities, course selection and placement activities, social/personal management and decision making activities.
  • Make available and use data to help the whole school look at student outcomes.
  • Participate/consult with teams for problem-solving; ensure responsiveness to equity and cultural diversity issues as well as learning styles. Assess and interpret student needs, recognizing differences in culture, languages, values and backgrounds.
  • Participate in staff development, in-services and trainings related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and in K-12 education; model appropriate behaviors; develop; recommend and implement improvements in education practices with awareness and understanding of their impact in a racially and culturally diverse community.
  • Assist students with personal and social development; provide information about community resources for personal and social needs; counsel students individually and in groups concerning social or personal issues which affect educational progress; provide information, counseling and referral for students with alcohol, drug, social and/or related issues.
  • Progress toward professional goals and contribute to school-wide goals through self-reflection and self-reporting, teamwork, parent/student surveys, meetings, record keeping, portfolios, peer collaboration and other measures and methods.
  • Update and maintain accurate and complete records of student progress and development as required by school, district, state and federal policies, regulations and laws.
  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships and accept a share of the responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be properly licensed by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission for counseling with the appropriate grade level for the assignment.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • ESOL Endorsement


Knowledge of:

  • Effective counseling program needs assessment, goal setting, plan formulation and program evaluation strategies.
  • Counseling theories, models and techniques for individual and group counseling.


Ability to:

  • Initiate and coordinate school-wide guidance and counseling activities. Follow up individual and group counseling to monitor student issues.
  • Assist parents and teachers in understanding and responding to developmental levels of students. Present instructional/informational programs to groups of students, parents, and teachers.
  • Interpret achievement and aptitude test data to assist school staff with curriculum planning. Assist teachers with the integration of guidance activities into the curriculum.
  • Adhere to ethical standards of the counseling profession. Interpret testing results and other student data accurately.


In addition to salary and benefits, district pays the employee's 6% contribution to PERS


All district employees will be required to provide proof of vaccination, or documentation of a medical or non-medical exception using the Oregon Health Authorities form.
