Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon (ECSO) is hiring for the position of 911 Calltaker-Dispatcher. ECSO is an emergency calltaking and dispatch facility located in Jackson County, Oregon, serving the population of the beautiful Rogue Valley and Crater Lake National Park.

No experience is necessary to apply, as we provide a paid training program to successfully hired candidates. Applicants with experience in public safety dispatching or calltaking are also encouraged to apply.

Important! - Please note: Before applying, please be certain you are able to type 40 wpm (after deductions for errors) on a standard keyboard. Keyboarding and Data Entry are essential baseline skills for this position and are not taught in our training program.

Starting pay for trainees is $4,705 per month. Step increases are earned by years employed up to $6,003 per month at the top step (55 months of service.)

Timeline
Now through mid-February - skill testing to qualify for interview
February 23rd - panel interviews
March/April - further evaluation for passing candidates (background checks, etc.)
April 12 - estimated hire date / start of training (subject to change)

All applicants will be given a skills test to measure Keyboarding speed, Data Entry speed, and other job-related abilities. The test takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. It can be done on your home computer or at our facility. To take the test at home you will need:

  • Computer with a keyboard (the test is not touch-screen enabled)
  • Reliable internet connection
  • Standard web browser (Edge, Chrome, or Firefox are recommended. Safari is possible with adjustments. Other browsers might not correctly run all test elements.)
  • Optional: mouse or trackpad (your keyboard's Tab/Shift-Tab can be used to navigate instead)
  • Optional: Audio speaker or headphones (one test uses an audible alert tone; but the alert also flashes onscreen)

A 911 Calltaker-Dispatcher receives and prioritizes E 9-1-1 and non-emergency telephone calls from the public; processes information using a computer-aided-dispatch (CAD) system; dispatches appropriate emergency service agencies such as police, fire and emergency medical units; and monitors public safety units in the field. They also retrieve and enter computer data for emergency response personnel within the service area.   • Ability to read and interpret street and location maps
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, Users, associated agencies, and the general public
  • Ability to distinguish and simultaneously hear telephone and multiple radio traffic
  • Ability to quickly read, process, and memorize considerable quantities of information

Shift Schedule

ECSO operates 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Individual weekly shifts are 4 sequential days of 10-hours each. Our earliest daily shift is 5 AM to 3 PM and our latest shift is 9 PM to 7 AM with a variety of other options staggered throughout the day. During the initial training months, a new hire must be able to work the same shift as their trainer. After release from training, shift schedules are bid by seniority for 4-month blocks (per our collective bargaining agreement with the dispatchers' union.)

Requirements

  • Age 18 years or older
  • Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of the General Education Degree
  • Ability to type 40 wpm (net) on a standard Keyboard
  • Ability to enter alphanumeric data with minimal errors whether data is received visually or aurally
  • Able to successfully satisfy a thorough personal history background check, which will include a criminal history check
  • Able to pass a psychological exam
  • Able to pass pre-hire drug testing
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States of America
  • Preferred: Experience in computer data entry and retrieval of information
  • Preferred: Experience in dealing with the public
  • Must be able to obtain and keep the following certifications (acquired during training and employment): Oregon DPSST Telecommunicator, Oregon DPSST Emergency Medical Dispatcher, International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) EMD Certification, First AID/CPR, LEDS, NENA Hearing Standards for Public Safety
