Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.

The position serves as the administrative specialist to the Dual Enrollment & Governor’s School Coordinator, providing direct clerical and organizational support for the Dual Enrollment program and annual Governor’s School. This position assists with the day-to-day operations of the office. Duties include, but are not limited to, intake and collection of all dual enrollment documentation, course setup within the student information system, course registrations, creation of course rosters, and collection of course documentation including course syllabi, faculty credentials, student assessment results, etc., maintenance of dual enrollment databases, regular communication with school system personnel, students and parents, opening and distributing mail, copying, filing, record retention, etc. This position also manages requests for proposals and scheduling for the summer Governor’s School program, including coordination of food, supplies, student applications, orientation and registration. The person in this position ensures confidentiality of all processes and communications while running the office in an effective and efficient manner.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to be successful in the position:
  • Working knowledge of administrative and office support functions including file management, with both electronic and physical files.
  • Basic bookkeeping principles.
  • Basic office management skills.
  • Ability to independently manage, prioritize, and make decisions in a busy office environment in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Ability to utilize personal computers and current software programs and the operation of automated office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively, orally and in writing, with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent customer service skills in a student-facing role.
  • Ability to compose business correspondence utilizing proper grammar and punctuation.


Minimum requirements for the position:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience or higher education courses in modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Experience or higher education courses in word processing, complex spreadsheet applications, database, and desktop publishing applications.
  • Expert to Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to use correct business communications including grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary as demonstrated by the position application and supporting documents.
  • Demonstrated effective telephone techniques established through previous experience or through a higher education course.
  • Average to high typing/data entry skills with high accuracy rate.


Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s Degree in business management or a related field.
Three or more years of experience in an office setting.
Microsoft Excel certification.
