Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) Division of Aeronautics has six airstrips throughout our Idaho backcountry that are maintained by caretakers. Our airstrip locations include Porthill on the Canadian border, Cavanaugh Bay on Priest Lake 35 miles north of Priest River, Johnson Creek near Yellow Pine 65 miles northeast of Cascade, Big Cr located about 20 miles northwest of Yellow Pine, Garden Valley 50 miles north of Boise and Smiley Creek 20 miles south of Stanley.

ITD is hiring a team of two temporary caretakers for our Johnson C r eek Airstri p located in Cascade, Idaho and one temporary caretaker for our Cavanaugh Bay Airstrip located in Coolin, Idaho. The season of employment varies somewhat per airport but typically runs from late-April or May to mid-September, not to exceed 5 months.

Johnson Creek Airstrip (team of two):
  • At Johnson Creek we prefer a team of two, each working 40 hours per week.
  • With the amount of visitors at each of these airports, you would be required to be on site at least during your work week. This is primarily because of the high usage of these facilities requires almost constant attention.
  • Furnished with 1 bedroom with queen bed, 1 bath, furnished apartment provided rent free, includes washer/dryer.
Cavanaugh Bay Airstrip (1 position):
  • This is for one position and will work 40 hours per week.
  • With the amount of visitors at each of these airports, you would be required to be on site at least during your work week. This is primarily because of the high usage of these facilities requires almost constant attention.
  • This location will not be furnished as it is undergoing updates to the facilities.
  • The successful candidate for this position will need to provide their own RV while we complete that facility work. No sewer hookup is available, but we will have some temporary showers and toilets on site while we complete the project.

NOTE: The job requires a valid driver’s license and driving records are checked as you would be required to operate a state vehicle.

Example of Duties

  • Perform minor repairs to buildings and related fixtures.
  • Clean restroom, shower facilities and campgrounds daily or more frequently if needed.
  • Manage rental of courtesy cars, keep account of monies, and do required paperwork.
  • Keep vehicles clean and in working order, service/ minor repair as needed.
  • Maintain landscape by irrigating & mowing runway and grounds weekly.
  • Keep equipment in working order, service/minor repair as needed.
  • Keep a supply of firewood available, that we buy it from a local resident. At times you will need to supplement the pile until we can get a load delivered or at times do a little maintenance clearing/cutting with the use of a chain saw and log splitter.
  • Performs duties as airport host: Meet and greets pilots, answering questions about the area. Helps fly-in organizers with any logistic problems to accommodate up to 100 aircraft and 200 visitors.
  • Provides a positive image of the airport with the ability working with diverse groups of people.
  • Enforce department policies and ensure visitors have an enjoyable experience. Ensures aircraft safety on the airstrip, notify Aeronautics of safety concerns, missing aircraft or aircraft mishaps.
  • Turn in weekly reports through email and monthly vehicle/equipment reports to the airport manager through the normal mail.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Working at a remote airstrip requires being self-sufficient, individually motivated and the ability to deal with many unforeseen problems as they arise.
  • This position requires the use of hand tools, battery or gas-powered tools associated with grounds maintenance; operating ATV/UTV’s, tractors with power take-off (PTO) driven mowers. As well as requiring you to bend, stoop, and climb ladders.
  • Ability to lift approximately 50 lbs.
  • The normal work week is Thursday-Monday with Tuesday and Wednesday being the days off. Normal work hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a one hour break for lunch, although some days may begin and end earlier, or vice versa. Weather conditions may also alter your schedule, in that one day may be shorter due to weather while the next may be longer to catch up.
  • As a representative of the State of Idaho at a highly active recreational airport you will be expected to present yourself neatly and professionally.
  • You will also not be permitted or expected to provide technical information or assistance to aviators such as aviation weather, aircraft performance, aircraft maintenance or hand propping.

The job is defined as temporary employment and holidays are worked and paid at time and a half.

Normal work hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour break for lunch, although some days may begin and end earlier, or vice versa. Weather conditions may also alter your schedule, in that one day may be shorter due to weather while the next may be longer to catch up.

If hired for this position, you would represent the State of Idaho at a highly active recreational airport. You will be expected to present yourself neatly and professionally.
