This is skilled work operating specialized automotive equipment. Work usually includes servicing and making minor repairs to equipment operated. This person may act as crew leader over a small number of employees to accomplish specific tasks or assignments. A supervisor gives general directions in routine tasks and special instructions when changes are made in established procedures.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Operates tractors, trucks and other construction and maintenance equipment, including loaders, backhoes, winches, snow plows, and other attachments.
  • Operates equipment used in pavement markings.
  • Operates vehicles on the airfield and in other airport movement areas.
  • Communicates with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) – Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT).
  • Operates pavement maintenance equipment used for asphalt or concrete pavement maintenance repair.
  • May lead maintenance crews in maintaining, repairing and cleaning streets and airport surfaces.
  • Performs work and operates equipment on the air operations area for the maintenance and upkeep of markings, signage, paved surfaces, unpaved surfaces, drainage systems, grounds, landscaping, fencing and other exterior property and facilities.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of work areas.
  • Performs mechanical maintenance work on equipment operated.
  • May act as a backup operator or assistant to an Equipment Operator III.

Requirements of Work

  • Knowledge of the principles of automotive equipment operation
  • Knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance activities
  • Knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance activities
  • May require knowledge of methods used in making concrete, asphalt and brick repairs; or knowledge of paints, thinners and related supplies
  • May require working knowledge of work zone traffic control
  • Ability to lead the work of a small number of helpers
  • Ability to learn and apply FAA regulations, applicable FAA advisory circulars and airport standard operating procedures
  • Ability to maneuver into riding machines with two foot steep first step, and onto frame or fender as required to perform fluid/filter checks and other required maintenance on vehicular equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 90 pounds, or up to 275 pounds with the assistance of another person
  • Ability to use a jackhammer and a chainsaw safely and effectively
  • Ability to maintain balance and tolerate riding heavy equipment over rough terrain for long periods of time
  • Ability to work outdoors during inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to walk on improved and unimproved surfaces up to one mile several times daily
  • Ability to climb up and down stairs, ladders and other inclined surfaces
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to airborne environmental nuisances associated with traffic and machine exhaust, fumes,open grounds, and construction
  • Ability to tolerate equipment and machinery noise, with the use of hearing protection, for up to 100 decibels
  • Ability to perform tasks that require one to push, pull, climb, bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk for most of an eight-hour shift.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and brightness accurately under day or night conditions
  • Ability to hear and speak over the telephone, company radio and VHF radio
  • Far vision sufficient to determine condition of internal and external facilities and equipment during normal emergency and adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to work any shift, holidays and mandatory overtime during times of critical need.
  • Ability to be on call up to 24 hours per day
  • Ability to pass AOA Movement Area Driver (FAA) and Airport Security Access (TSA) training
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Class B CDL with air brake endorsement
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.06 - $24.11 per hour
