About the Position
The Animal Behavior Administrator is responsible for the overall behavioral health and well-being of the shelter population, placing concentrated focus on assessment, behavior modification, and management, stress reduction, enrichment, shortening the length of stay, providing adopter and foster support, and ensuring animals are placed for success in homes. The Behavior Administrator develops, executes, and oversees regular in-shelter welfare rounds, environmental enrichment, and thorough training and behavior pathway plans. This position works closely with the adoptions, alternative placement, and clinic teams. All functions are to be performed in keeping with ACC’s philosophy of utilizing humane and safe standards of care for the community, volunteers, and staff utilizing methods to achieve desired objectives while minimizing stress on the animal.

We Require
-
Bachelor’s degree in animal or behavioral sciences or a related field
-
Two years of experience evaluating animal behavior or implementing and developing animal enrichment programs
-
An equivalent combination of related post-secondary education and/or relevant experience may be considered in substitution for the minimum qualifications on a year for year basis

A valid Arizona driver's license and have an acceptable driving record

Animal Behavior certifications such as ACAAB from a training academy. CAAB/ACAAB is highly preferred. Other animal training/behavior certifications such as CPDT-KSA, CBCC-KA, or equivalent will also be considered
Job Contributions

Manage, develop, and implement a behavior evaluation system using best practices and current research

Collaborate with division managers and training specialists in the development of animal handling programs and support them in assessing the training needs for their department. Written protocols for animal handling should be consistent with current standards that exist in the Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters and Fear Free methods

Support the Shelter Managers on the implementation of adoption programs that will facilitate good adoption matches through conversation; help set realistic, transparent expectations of time, care, and financial commitment

Research, implement, and evaluate that all shelter animals are receiving adequate enrichment opportunities resulting in stress reduction and behavior modification if deemed necessary

Establish guidelines for canine playgroups ensuring adequate training, participation, and effectiveness

Develop and review operational policies & procedures, evaluating them for the safety of our associates and low-stress handling of the dogs in our care

Ensure that every animal in the shelter’s care has clear and objective behavior notes, training plans, and placement recommendations in the shelter database to support the improved promotion, better matchmaking, and ultimately shortened length of stay

Manage welfare rounds on all animals in the shelter monitoring their behavioral health and identifying those displaying signs of stress or anxiety in need of immediate intervention

Foster a team environment by working cooperatively with all departments, staff, and volunteers, and providing excellent customer service both internally and externally
Working Conditions

Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly

Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
