Animal Caretaker – Part-time

Reports to Kennel Team Leader

Scope of Position: Responsible for providing high quality care for animals in the shelter

Job Description/Major Responsibilities

• Perform animal care duties such as preparing food, feeding and providing water, cleaning and disinfecting areas, washing litter and food pans, sweeping and mopping floors, washing and sweeping debris from walls, beds and any other areas in accordance with proper sanitizing measures
• Monitor sick, quarantined and injured animals; observe them for unusual physical and behavioral conditions. Report issues (i.e. behavioral and medical) to Kennel Team Leader and enter incident into medical log.
• Assist staff with vaccinations and minor medical treatments; keep a record on the disposition of animals; perform a daily count of animals and report and condition or inconsistencies to the supervisor as appropriate.
• Responsible for providing daily enrichment to shelter pets
• Comply with all ICHS policies, procedures, and protocols
• Monitor inventory of supplies and notify appropriate personnel when supplies are needed
• Repair or report any broken or damaged equipment in a timely manner
• Relate to employees, volunteers, and visitors in a friendly, respectful, informative, and professional manner
• Assist staff as needed
• Other duties as assigned

Required Skill and Experience

• Must be 18 years of age
• Must be willing to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
• Punctuality and good attendance a must
• Previous experience with animals preferred; acquire and possess a thorough understanding of and dedication to the philosophies of animal welfare
• Must be able to work in conditions that involves exposure to animals of various temperaments, loud noises,
• Demonstrates approachability when dealing with general public
• Strong interpersonal skills, for example the ability to develop positive relationships with others and demonstrates sensitivity to the thoughts, feelings and perspectives of others
• Ability to work independently and within a group

• Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner
• Communicate effectively and completely on all documentation, including date, time, and initials for every note or memo written
• Maintain accurate time sheet
• Valid driver’s license

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to routinely lift 50lbs
• Ability to handle 100+ pound dogs
• Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Must be able to tolerate loud working conditions
• Allergic conditions, which could be aggravated when handling or working with animals, may be a disqualification
• Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including but not limited to: climbing up a ladder, lifting and carrying, reaching, stopping, squatting, cleaning and bending, and being on feet for long periods of time.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $11.00 - $15.00 per hour
