** Note:
This position is responsible for climbing poles up to 90ft., with gaffs and belts; installing transformers and cross arms; working in underground spaces to splice cables and disconnect switches; lift and carry heavy components for installation; study each month's materials and complete homework assignments.

- Work in underground spaces to splice cables and disconnect switches.
- Lift and carry heavy components for installation.
- Monthly lessons: study each month's materials and complete homework assignments.
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
- Must be willing and able to obtain a Class 3 driver's license.
- Must pass an initial 10-day intensive program for pole climbing and demonstrate the ability to climb 70 ft. poles.
- Demonstrated ability to give as well as receive and understand written and oral instructions.
- Demonstrated capability and willingness to climb poles up to 90 ft.
Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications:
- Prior electrical training.
- Prior pole/tree climbing/working at heights experience.
Conditions of Continued Employment:
- Exams will be given on each lesson, a passing grade must be achieved.
- Failure of 3 lessons in the three-year training period is grounds for dismissal.
- Final exam will be administered; if candidate fails exam, there will be one opportunity for re-examination.
- Training Program is two parts:
Part 1: Physical Characteristics (location of all high tension feeders, substations, etc.).
Part 2: Electrical theory and cable splicing training.

Wage Progression: 12/16/2014 Rate: $42.473 is the 100% rate
70% - 1st. 240 days of compensated time
70% - 2nd 240 days of compensated time
75% - 3rd 240 days of compensated time
80% - 4th 240 days of compensated time
90% - 5th 240 days of compensated time
90% - 6th 240 days of compensated time
95% - 7th 240 days of compensated time
100% - 8th 240 days of compensated time
In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. Absence control violation(s) or more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance. Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A medical examination and safety sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
