Colonna’s Shipyard Inc. located in the Historic Berkley area of Norfolk, VA is the oldest family owned and operated private shipyard in the United States. Since 1875, we have acknowledged our employees as our strength and value their dedication to the family.

Colonna's Apprenticeship Program is a four-year program that combines classroom/college level instruction alongside on- the-job training under the guidance of experienced craftspeople.*

Over the course of the four years, apprentices will receive on-the-job training (OJT) and classroom instruction (RTI) while learning a skilled trade. Apprentices will perform shipboard work in support of repair and industrial fabrication of Navy, Commercial and Private maritime vessels.*

• Crane & Rigging

Riggers in the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry are responsible for: lifting, removal and installation of equipment, materials, and structural components whether aboard vessels or around the shipyard utilizing hooking cranes, scaffolding, quality assurance and other advanced rigging practices.

The Rigging Apprentice will learn to calculate the weight factors and angles used in the proper lifting and transferring of heavy loads. Riggers are responsible for installing the safety nets, anchor chains, elevator cables, and mooring ropes onboard the ships and for line handling of the cables and ropes when docking or undocking the ships.

Marine Electrician*

Marine Electricians in the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry are responsible for: the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical components on shipboard systems such as wiring, controllers, motors, panels, and switchboards.

Structural Welder*

Welders in the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry are responsible for the repair of metal structures by performing cutting and joining of marine materials using advanced welding and thermal processes onboard vessels.
Welding Apprentices will perform burning, welding, and grinding and become specialist in the fusing of materials together such as: Steel, Aluminum, Brass and Stainless Steel.

Structural welding is used to create metal frameworks for boats, ships, vessels, buildings, bridges, vehicles, and a variety of other complex structures.

Shipfitter*

In the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry Shipfitters are responsible for the repair, including fabrication, repair, removal, and installation of ship structures such as foundations, decks, bulkheads etc. onboard vessels.

Shipfitters work alongside structural welders on the repair of metal structures or fixtures.

Fabrication Welder*

Welders in the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry are responsible for the construction of metal structures by performing cutting and joining of marine materials using advanced welding and thermal processes onboard vessels.
Welding Apprentices will perform burning, welding, and grinding and become specialist in the fusing of materials together such as: Steel, Aluminum, Brass and Stainless Steel.

Metal fabrication uses a variety of methods to build new structures, machines, and other products from raw materials. These materials can include castings, formed, and expanded metals, flat metals, plate meal, and welding wire.

Structural Fitter*

In the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry Fitters are responsible for the construction, including fabrication, repair, removal, and installation of ship structures such as foundations, decks, bulkheads etc. onboard vessels.

Fitters work alongside structural welders on the construction of metal structures or fixtures.

Inside Machinist*

Inside Machinist in the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry are responsible for the operation of various machines and tools used to produce precision metal parts in large quantities. Inside Machine shop equipment includes lathes, milling machines, drill presses and spindles.

Inside Machinist Apprentices will learn the basic principles of each machine and masters the techniques for cutting tools, adjustments, measurements, speeds, feeds and how to apply them in each process.

Outside Machinist*

Outside Machinist in the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry are responsible for repair, removal, overhaul, and installation of mechanical components on shipboard systems such as engines, valves, deck equipment etc.

Along with the process of installing equipment Outside Machinist Apprentices will gain experience reading and interpreting blueprints.

Marine Painter*

Marine Painter Apprentice in the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry are trained to paint vessels and structures using specialized spray equipment, brushes, and rollers. In some cases, apprentices will use unique compounds that prevent corrosion or create a membrane that seals the boat.

Marine Pipefitter*

Marine Pipefitters in the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry are responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of high temperature and high-pressure piping systems such as: hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam heating, and steam-generating systems.
While gaining experience reading and interpreting blueprints Pipefitting Apprentices will gain fundamental skills and techniques of piping fabrication, inspection, and testing.

Gas Free Technician*

In the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry gas free technicians are responsible for maintaining tanks and handling of all hazardous and nonhazardous materials. Technicians will work with ventilation, hoses, and pumps.

Dock Mechanic*

In the ship repair and industrial fabrication industry dock mechanics are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of docking platforms, dry docks, and marine railways.

Responsibilities:Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to:

• Sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, reach, push, pull, stoop, crawl, kneel, balance, lift and carry various objects and equipment
• Use hands to handle objects, to control objects and/or tools
• Reach with hands and arms
• Work in confined spaces such as boilers, tanks, and voids
• Access areas of facility and vessels by inclined and vertical ladders
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

Compensation & Benefits:Colonna’s Apprenticeship Program compensation is based on a graduated pay scale. Every six-months apprentices are evaluated on skill, performance, and grades to be eligible for the next scheduled pay increase.
