OBJECTIVE:
Under general supervision and guidance of the Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Supervisor and guidance from the Recreation Programmer, the Aqua Fitness Instructor leads instruction of Aqua Zumba classes 2 evenings per week at Rockport Pool during the pool season.

RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Supervisor; Recreation Programmer

Works with seasonal employees on a regular basis and communicates with other division employees, professional staff, customers, and the general public.

Essential Duties

  • Understands and able to demonstrate proper hydro aerobic and aqua fitness exercises.
  • Maintains a presence with proper apparel and equipment.
  • Prepares instruction plans and related equipment.
  • Scans and surveys the pool for potential issues.
  • Provides necessary first aid and/or CPR and reacts appropriate in emergency situations.
OTHER DUTIES:
  • Keeps proper records of attendance for each class.
  • Informs Supervisors of issues that arise.
  • Provides polite customer service to all class participants.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform the essential duties of the position.

Education, Certifications and Experience:


  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Previous experience in teaching aerobic and/or aqua fitness classes preferred.

Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of water aerobics and Zumba activities.

Skill in:
  • Teaching aqua fitness fundamentals and exercises.

Ability to:
  • Ability to follow City/Department/Division policies, work independently, and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in verbal and written form and to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, department professionals, staff, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to work evenings.
  • Always maintain a positive behavior and professional demeanor, address resident and customer concerns in a helpful, courteous manner.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.

Supplemental Information

EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS AND MACHINES:

Equipment used includes various teaching tools, such as water noodles, water weights, kickboards, etc.

PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

1. Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in program activities.

2. Work will take place in an outdoor environment and varying types of weather, including
possibility of high heat and humidity.

3. Working conditions involve occasional exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture.

4. Perform basic instruction to program activities, which may include, but not limited to:
Semi-reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, turning,
and lying on stomach and/or back.

5. Must be able to sit or stand and move for long periods of time.

6. See and observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility, with or without
reasonable accommodation.
