Area Manager - Chicago, IL
Supervisory Responsibilities: Lead and supervise a project team of Area Managers and drivers; monitor, track, and document performance; give feedback to employees; discipline behavior that does not meet project and company employment and safety policies.
Position type and expected hours of work: Hours of work will depend on the job event and manager. Evening, night, and weekend work will be required as job duties demand.
Summary: This position is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable management of operation location within the Chicago Marketplace.
Essential functions:
Site Operations:
- Develop the operation strategy to ensure a profitable business; adjust strategy and daily operational activities to meet profit objectives
- Hire project employees; communicate expectations, conduct new-hire safety training; direct the work schedules of employees; report weekly time to corporate HR; enforce company employment policies and communicate discipline to corporate HR.
- Direct the work of employees in safety-sensitive areas i.e. confined spaces, tanks, ponds, remote areas, etc.
- Ensure efficient, safe operations of trucks, tractors, loaders, grinders, screeners, dozers and other similar equipment.
- Coordinate with corporate environmental managers to ensure compliance with all regulations that apply to our business.
- Ensure that the project operates consistently to meet customer expectations, OSHA regulations, DOT compliance, and company policy; hold team members accountable.
- Communicate effectively with customer representatives at the job sites.
- Inspect and maintain equipment and Jobsite daily and report changes to General Manager.
- Complete daily/weekly operations reports, safety meetings, and time reporting paperwork.
- Ensure the Local Manager’s worksites are kept clean.
- Maintain a professional appearance and use personal protection equipment (PPE) when required.
Customer management:
- Complete management of inbound and outbound customer relationships via a more typical sales and marketing focus to ensure project hits budgetary needs. This includes key contacts for inbound tipping wastes from larger volume clients and outbound larger clients like Scotts and other large customers
- Work with Denali Corporate team on relationships for Scotts or other large volume customers where possible
Product development:
- Continue evolving and developing the blended topsoil market to more and more customers yearly to diversify sales away from single source customers on outbound (Scotts). Develop a mulch product for landscapers from added inbound brush materials.
Competency:
Safety-minded, above-average decision-making, time management, and problem-solving skills. Ability to complete the necessary paperwork required. This position is a safety-sensitive position and requires a clear mind and diligence. The employee has the responsibility for his/her own safety as well as the safety of others.
Preferred background:
- Strong Operations background for earthmoving, composting equipment, or equivalent along with other duties.
Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, or overwhelming odors.
Physical demands: To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, climb and hear. The employee is constantly required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and walk. The employee must occasionally lift. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Travel: Travel may be frequent depending on the job assigned but generally minimal.
Preferred education and experience: High School Diploma or GED Preferred. Proficient in Excel, Word, and Microsoft office. Must be able to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English. Must maintain a valid driver's license. Proven experience managing a similar type of project. Must be able to operate agriculture and/or construction equipment, and experience working with composting operations a plus.
