Position Summary
The Assistant Dean of Students for the Dean of Students Office is a full-time, 12-month position within The Dean of Students Office, reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Students. The Assistant Dean is focused on the education and retention of students primarily by providing support and advocacy services for students, and consultation to faculty, staff, and parents/families. The role has two components. One is focused on crisis/mental health concerns and assisting students in crisis or distress to prioritize issues and bring UNCG and community resources to bear in order to maximize student success. The other component of advocacy is one of an “ombudsperson” who hears concerns, interprets policies and procedures, makes appropriate referrals, assists students and others with understanding of an array of options, and weighing the consequences of a variety of decisions.
The Assistant Dean is a central part of UNCG’s efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive environment, with particular emphasis on student retention and success. This position serves as the case manager for students who have been in severe distress, students who have been the subject of a threat assessment, students experiencing homelessness and/or food insecurity, and reporting and responding parties involved in sexual misconduct and/or interpersonal violence situations. The Assistant Dean must have strict attention to detail without close supervision, a working knowledge of mental health concerns, the ability to assess threatening behavior and the skills to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals including law enforcement, community providers, faculty, staff, parents/families and students. Outreach and collaboration will be important components of this position working closely with campus partners such as the Counseling Center, UNCG Police Department, Housing and Residence Life and other departments.
The Assistant Dean position utilizes counseling, training, organizational, and advocacy skills in working with students, families, faculty, and staff. The Assistant Dean works directly with diverse group of individuals at all levels of the institution and therefore must be able to work extremely well in cooperation with others. The Assistant Dean must have the ability to listen attentively, help individualist and prioritize options, identify campus and community resources, and balance a multitude of details. The Assistant Dean must continually balance the needs of the individual while upholding the policies and processes of the University while considering equity for all students. The Assistant dean must be able to deal effectively with emotionally charged situations and disruptive individuals and use professional and appropriate language and behavior to provide positive university experiences.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum requirements are a Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education counseling, or another appropriate field of graduate study and a minimum of four years of professional experience in a crisis management role providing support and advocacy for college students.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred qualifications include a candidate that has successfully served in an on-call crisis response capacity; experience with crisis intervention and case management in student affairs or in college or university setting; experience with Maxient software; and working knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); Clery Act, Title 11, Title IX, VAWA, and other applicable federal/state guidelines and laws that affect the practice of student support and advocacy.
  • The desired candidate will have an understanding of student learning and development; ability to achieve results in an environment of diversity and multiculturalism; and excellent interpersonal, communication, crisis response, and conflict management skills.
  • A candidate must have the ability to balance multiple obligations in an efficient and effective way, remain professional and compassionate during emotionally charged situations, takes initiative in the workplace and work as an integral member of a supportive team.
  • The Assistant Dean will be a member of a highly functioning team that includes graduate and undergraduate students.
  • The ability to make difficult decisions while remaining positive in a fast paced environment is crucial.
  • The Assistant Dean must be able to commit to a philosophy of excellent service, compassion and creative problem solving.
  • Ideal candidates will have successfully served in an on-call crisis response capacity as well as an advocacy role for the campus community and have a documented record of initiating proactive strategies that enhance retention and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment.
