Fox Chapel Publishing is seeking a dynamic Assistant Editor, Magazines. The Assistant Editor, Magazines works to gather, generate, and edit visual and written content for publication in (or associated with) Fox Chapel Publishing’s two quarterly magazines, Woodcarving Illustrated and Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts, under the direction of the Editor, Magazines.

Home offices are located in Mount Joy, PA. Candidate MUST be able to commute to home offices Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Edit articles from raw text into final publication
  • Write features, product reviews, news blurbs, blog posts, and other copy as needed
  • Generate social media content for Instagram accounts in collaboration with Marketing
  • Correspond with readers, contributors, and other Fox team members on a regular basis
  • Test content for technical accuracy and recreate/reshoot project steps as needed
  • Search for acquisitions (projects, features, product reviews)
  • Coach authors regularly on article content as it develops
  • Meet with magazine team to discuss priorities, acquisitions, and scheduling
  • Assist Editor, Magazines with planning issues
  • Coordinate newsletter content and web material for each issue
  • In collaboration with Marketing, participate in planning contests related to magazines
  • Provide support to book editorial (woodworking questions, photo shoots)
  • Send book ideas/proposals and materials to Acquisitions Editors as they come in
  • Test-cut projects in-house
  • Help locate and prepare props for photo shoots
  • Add decorative painting to existing projects
  • Assist in planning for shows and representing magazines/Fox to the public
  • Plan artist demonstrations
  • Lead issue handoff meetings with marketing/sales in advance of each season
  • Assist in setting prices, terms, and article details as acquisitions are approved
  • Assist other staff with questions and help to find a solution to complete the task at hand
  • Other duties as seen necessary

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in English, Publishing or similar degree, as well as one to five years related trade experience. Or combination of education, experience and training. Knowledge of publishing process, procedures, and techniques is preferred.

Cognitive Tasks:

Ability to comprehend, retain, and follow oral and written instructions. Can exercise good judgment, work independently, make decisions, organize and maintain detailed information. Can effectively set priorities. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations without precedent.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May be required to utilize tools such as scroll saw and general power tools.

Work Environment:

Ability to work independently or as a member of a team. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

Language and Communication Skills:

Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Must possess conflict resolution and/or mediation skills.

Can read, write, and communicate effectively in the English language.

Can read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, charts and graphs, policy and procedure manuals.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence.

Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, personnel, clients, customers, and the general public.

Must have a strong and thorough knowledge or English grammar, proofreading, and correcting text as necessary.

Computer Skills:

Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite products.

Language and Communication Skills

This position requires a high-level knowledge base of English grammar and spelling, in accordance with The Chicago Manual of Style. Can read, write, and communicate effectively in the English language. Can read, interpret, and edit manuscripts on a wide variety of topics. Ability to write work order memos and business correspondence. Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, coworkers, and customers.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour
