Role Summary:

The Associate Director of Vivarium Operations & Research Support provides day-to-day oversight for animal care and research support activities within the Animal Care & Welfare Program and oversees proper deployment and tracking of facility space, equipment, and associated resources.

Essential responsibilities:

  • Assures that the care and welfare of laboratory animals is provided in accordance with internal and external standards & regulations,
  • Play a key role in executing local activities in alignment with the IVS global strategy and global harmonization efforts.
  • Provide people leadership for animal care & research support staff, study coordinator/scheduler, and program coordinator who supports vivarium operations and physical plant activities, including ensuring adherence to established policies and procedures.
  • Effectively management of talent, including hiring, retaining, training, and developing a diverse workforce, including active performance management and mentoring of all staff.
  • Provide strategic leadership utilizing good management practices to establish staff priorities and harmonized business practices to maximize the contributions of staff’s support of Janssen Discovery portfolio.
  • Ensure an active occupational health & safety program for the vivarium and all individuals who have contact with research animals.
  • Promote a Culture of Care and serve as a visible and effective champion for the 3Rs.
  • In partnership with the IVS Site Lead, manage the local business continuity and disaster planning for the vivarium.
  • Serve as an interface with the in vivo research partners and ensure all partners needs are addressed in a timely manner, including ensuring research support is provided.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of quality management and preventative maintenance programs, support operational budget planning, purchase of capital equipment and supplies, and effective management of the infrastructure and physical plant of the vivarium.
  • Local planning and execution for animal-related procurement and vendor relationship management necessary to advance the Janssen Discovery pipeline.
  • Local evaluation and planning for global facilities & infrastructure and animal care processes for compliance with applicable regulations and institutional standards.
  • Maintains records to align with applicable local, state, federal regulations, applicable animal welfare accreditation standards, and internal compliance regulations.
  • Support operational excellence by collecting metrics and operational trends within the animal care & welfare programs, including developing & implementing operational best practices & procedures.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; Must be able to regularly read, understand, and follow-through on all correspondence.
  • Must be able to work under time constraints with minimal direction of day-to-day responsibilities
  • Excellent organization skills, including scheduling, timely follow-up, and attention to detail.
  • Outstanding diplomacy and negotiating skills are required.
  • Must be able to regularly read, understand, verify accuracy, and document various written of protocols, including Animal Care and Use Protocols, Standard Operating Procedures, work instructions, etc.
  • Must be able to work with external regulatory agencies and accreditation groups.
  • Compliance and strong working knowledge of applicable USDA, FDA, GLPs, GMPs, applicable animal welfare guidelines, and AAALAC requirements.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Some “off-core business hours” meeting participation and work required.
  • Must complete all annual training requirements.
  • Must perform all work per appropriate safety standards.
  • Stay ahead of current trends and practices in field of expertise by completing required continuing education.
  • Ability to wear all Personal Protective Equipment required to perform work tasks.
  • Applicable vaccinations may be required for entry and work within specific laboratory and vivarium spaces.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Understanding of the overall process of drug discovery and development is preferred.
  • Major biotech/pharma experience preferred.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in related field required, Masters degree in management, project management, animal sciences, or related subject areas and/or other advanced degrees (DVM, VMD, Ph.D.) is preferred.
  • Extensive expertise in vivarium operations and facility management is required.
  • Working scientific knowledge and understanding as it relates to in vivo research models.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of pharmaceutical/biotechnology in vivo sciences or related experience in drug development is required.
  • Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) or equivalent/related certification highly preferred.
  • Extensive working knowledge of key vivarium equipment and operational processes required.
  • Confirmed track-record in working with large complex, international teams is preferred.
  • The overall background of experience and education should be sufficient to allow performance of the job requirements listed.

IVS Essential Personnel Statement:

This is an essential personnel role. Essential Personnel are defined as the staff who are required to report to their designated work location, to ensure the operation of essential functions or departments during an emergency, as determined by Janssen, or when the business has suspended operations. There are some individuals who may be required to perform essential services remotely and those individuals will be identified in advance and notified by their supervisors, but in most cases Essential Personnel are required to be on-site during an emergency or suspension of operations.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is 131000 to 225400.
