SUMMARY
The Athletics Academic Advisor is a campus student-athlete advocate. The Advisor is responsible for oversight of the student tutors, has the capability to advise students in most academic areas, and will work with other universities/colleges to follow proper transfer protocols. The Advisor meets with struggling students to develop an academic plan for success and notifies college advisors periodically when students need academic intervention.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with college and athletic administrators, coaches, faculty and staff. Collaborate and coordinate with student services staff.
2. Provide pre-assessment of student-athletes' academic abilities and skills during their first semester of enrollment.
3. Work with students and coaches to ensure progress toward graduation for a smooth transfer to NCAA or NAIA.
4. Report any concerns or compromise or violation of rules, standards, guidelines or policies to the Director of Advising.
5. Direct students to resources within the College.
6. Monitor and help to ensure that all student athletes are maintaining satisfactory progress toward their degree and assist with monitoring of academic eligibility to complete in athletic events.
7. Ensure that student athletes are informed of the program and services available within the campus.
8. Meet with prospective students as set up by Admissions.
9. Maintain complete and accurate records of student files.
10. Assist in coordinating and facilitating seminars and workshops.
11. Conduct grade checks as described in the Advising Communication Timeline.
12. Advise a minimum of 130 students per semester.
13. Conduct placement tests as needed and be familiar with the college placement test policy.
14. Enroll new students outside of enrollment days when the Director of Advising is unavailable.
15. Be available for enrollment days, registration days, visit days, and other events (GradFest, Major Mayhem, etc.)
16. Meet with students and help the Director monitor academic plans for students who do not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
17. Serve as the Tutor Coordinator for the Highland Campus and perform duties such as hiring, training, managing time sheets, scheduling, and evaluating the effectiveness of the tutor program.
18. Coordinate with regional and online students for online tutoring.
19. Attend monthly academic advising meetings.
20. Serve on assigned HCC committees.
21. Attend professional development when available.
22. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree in Education or related field required. Master's in Education or Counseling preferred. Three years adult level counseling or equivalent required. Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with students and/or individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic, and cultural backgrounds. Experience coordinating student assessment and advising projects preferred.

Language Skills
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, etc. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication within the college that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information in an effective manner and respond to questions from students, recruits, staff, faculty, and management.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts and to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Other Abilities/Skills
Must have excellent organizing, coordinating and decision making abilities and the ability to retain composure under pressure. Ability to work without close supervision and handle a varied job situation. Should have a service orientation and positive attitude towards students, employees, and community people who interact with the Advising Department. Should have the ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships and work as a team member. Should have excellent computer literacy skills, particularly in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the ability to learn software utilized by the College.

Other
Valid driver's license and good driving record with no major infractions within the past five years. The individual may be required to drive students on long trips and return in one day (up to 500 miles). Must have the ability to work long hours on occasion.
