JK Executive Strategies has partnered with a well-respected, full-service law firm, with offices spanning across New York State in its search for an Attorney to join its growing team! This opportunity joins a reputable nonprofit law firm providing civil legal services to low-income clients in a 14-county area of western New York. The Attorney will provide leadership, supervision, and comprehensive legal services to the firm’s clients.

Our client has offices in Rochester, Geneva, Ithaca, Bath, Elmira, Olean, Jamestown, and Geneseo. Viable candidates can work at any of the regional offices, with opportunity to work a hybrid schedule. Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal services to low-income clients and client groups including advice, negotiation, litigation and administrative advocacy in accordance with organization’s program priorities and case handling policies.
  • Represents clients zealously within the bounds of the Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Supervises other staff members as directed.
  • Develops a general understanding of those areas of law which affect low-income clients served by the organization’s program.
  • Works to develop specialized knowledge in a substantive area of housing and poverty law.
  • Demonstrates a proficiency in interviewing skills, issue identification, legal analysis, research and writing, discovery techniques, negotiation, oral advocacy and trial skills, and court rules and procedures.
  • Maintains a high level of professional competence through attendance at training sessions, seminars and conferences and individual efforts to keep abreast of current developments in poverty law, as well as issues in the community affecting poor people.
  • Collaborates with other human services providers, non-profit organizations and community, client, or other advocacy groups to address problems of the poor, including providing community legal education.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with all members of the office and program staff.
  • Attends case review, staff meetings and other activities, as required.
  • Participates in regional and statewide task force meetings and listservs related to his/her practice.
  • Cooperates in all grant reporting requirements, program reporting, timekeeping, and file maintenance.
  • Responsible for supervising caseload of supervised personnel, ensuring that each employee handles an appropriate amount of work, and coordinates the periodic review of these cases.
  • Coordinates and supervises litigation and administrative and/or legislative advocacy undertaken by members of the supervised staff and keeps the Deputy Director or Managing Attorney informed of these efforts.
  • Supervises interaction with community groups or community legal education.
  • Performs grant-specific responsibilities as delegated by the Deputy Director/Managing Attorney and assures that the grant reports are done in an effective and timely manner.
  • Helps identify appropriate opportunities for training and task force activities for supervised staff.

Qualifications

  • Admitted to practice and in good standing in New York State, eligible for admission without examination, or willing to take the next available Bar examination.
  • 3+ years’ experience working in a law firm or legal services.
  • Understands the specific experiences of historically marginalized racial groups in the U.S., particularly Black, Indigenous, and Latinx groups.
  • Embraces and actively promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment.
  • Able to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.
  • Prior experience with low-income and other oppressed communities and clients.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to empathize and sensitively respond to people in crisis situations.
  • Excellent use of Google Drive/GSuite, Word, and Excel; database programs a plus.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is an advantage but is not required.
  • Passion for social justice and commitment to the mission of organization.

Pay: $52,810.23 - $93,648.60 per year
