Autopsy Assistant, Binghamton, NY

United Health Services is seeking an Autopsy Assistant to join our Histology team in Binghamton, NY. The role of an Autopsy Assistant is to assist the Histology Supervisor and Forensic Pathologist in their daily tasks and work assignments within the morgue. This is a Per Diem position.

Salary range: $18.76 - $25.38 Depending on experience

Autopsy Assistant Overview

Under the direction of the Histology Supervisor and Forensic Pathologist, maintains the laboratory morgue in all operational aspects according to NYSDOH and CAP Guidelines, UHSH and UHSH Laboratory policies.

Autopsy Assistant Key Responsibilities and Expectations

Assists the pathologist in the preparation and performance of human post-mortem examinations. Ensures proper restoration of the body for release to the funeral director noting any biohazards, such as contagious disease, radioactive implants, etc., if applicable.
Ensures proper and legal authorization for necropsy. In cases of error or question, initiate procedure to obtain proper authorization.
Obtains and delivers patient’s chart and other pertinent data for review by the pathologist on autopsy call. Ensures the anatomical pathology accession of the body and assignment of each autopsy number.
Maintains accession log of autopsy specimens; ensuring specimens are appropriately labeled and identified and stored. Disposes of outdated surgical and autopsy specimens.
Assists the pathologist with gross photography of specimens
Ensures proper maintenance of equipment, adequate supplies, and general cleanliness of the autopsy suite.
Maintains proper external relationships and interactions with Coroners, Funeral Directors, Law Enforcement agencies, Broome County Dept. of Health, NYS Police Crime Lab)
Maintains and operates the alcohol/xylene distiller.
Maintains frozen section lab with supplies and cleanliness.
Prepares body for tissue donation when required according to protocol.

Position Qualifications

Minimum:
Associates Degree in a science related field; OR Graduate of School of Mortuary Science or equivalent experience.

Preferred:
Experience in surgical assistance at the technical level.
