Metro Chicago Hillel
Base Rabbis and their partner’s invite young Jews into their home for Shabbat and the Jewish holidays, create and lead dynamic learning opportunities including classes and retreats, facilitate community service and civic engagement projects, and provide pastoral counseling. Base teams must have a vision for the Jewish world that they want to share and an entrepreneurial spirit to actualize that vision. This is a dual role for a Rabbi and their spouse/partner to work as Metro Chicago Hillel (MCH) staff, engaging students from a number of commuter campuses.
Base Chicago is a part of Metro Chicago Hillel (MCH) and the Jewish United Fund (JUF), and a partner of the broader Base Movement.

BASE RABBI
Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Rabbinical ordination
• Experience with college students and/or young adults, and proven ability to relate to this developmental stage
• Living in a shared home with committed partner
• Success working in informal education frameworks
• Entrepreneurial energy; demonstrated ability to think and act strategically in order to reach clear goals.
• Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously.
• An Authentic Jewish Personality: a living model of how to live an integrated Jewish life and able to inspire others through his/her/their own story.
• A Relationship Builder: capable of building rapport and developing meaningful relationships with a wide variety of people.
• An Informal Educator: experienced with the theory and practice of informal/experiential education and will use that knowledge to model and teach others how to create the most effective opportunities for meaningful Jewish experiences.
• Knowledgeable & Life Long Learner: highly-educated in areas of Jewish content, thus providing a reservoir of knowledge to share; simultaneously pursuing continued education and ongoing growth and development.
• A Strategic Community Organizer: thinks strategically about how to reach and impact students and post-college young Jewish adults not involved in the traditional networks, and will utilize methodologies of community organizing in order to manage and strategize for success.
• A Self-Starter: highly motivated, driven to succeed, reflective and open.
• A Team Player: energized by collaboration and working in dynamic relationships with individuals, organizations, and community partners.
• An Entrepreneurial Spirit: energized by asking questions, trying new approaches to Jewish engagement, and demonstrating a willingness to take risks in order to actualize their vision for strengthening Jewish life.

The Base Rabbi will be successful by enabling Basers to achieve the following outcomes:

• Feel Jewishly confident/literate and/or comfortable with deep Jewish content
• Feel comfortable and welcome at Base
• Feel comfortable and connected with a Rabbi
• Feel a sense of responsibility to others in their community

• Integrate Jewish cycles/calendar/rituals as a point of reference in life
• Develop confidence and agency to “do Jewish” beyond Base
• Form community with peers that extends beyond Base walls

A typical day may include:

• Introductory or catch-up coffee meetings with students or young adults
• Pastoral one-on-one sessions
• Writing curriculum for new classes and cohorts
• Meeting with local Jewish communal leaders to learn about what is going on in their communities and strategize how Base might get involved
• Hosting a variety of learning, social, and service group programs in the evening
• Ideating or debriefing Base programs or experiences with Base colleagues
• Working with Moishe House staff to plan a retreat for your Base community
• Planning for Shabbat and extending invites to Base programs, meals etc.
• Recording interactions in CRM, running reports to identify engagement opportunities
• Teaching a class over a lunch break at a local nursing home with Basers as part of an intergenerational program etc.
• Buying groceries and supplies, menu planning, or cooking for an upcoming meal or programs
• Recruitment and social media for programs and retreats
• Liaising with MCH, JUF, Moishe House and Base colleagues
• Sharing your home and the Base program with leadership of the Chicago Jewish community and major donors to the program
• The Base Rabbi will also receive ongoing support from JUF, Metro Chicago Hillel, and the Base National Team. You will collaborate closely with Base Chicago rabbis, MCH staff and be an integral member of the Moishe House team and the Base Movement.

Benefits
Salary range is $75,000-$85,000.
The Base rabbi will be employed by the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Chicago (JUF). Comprehensive benefits package includes 22 days paid time off, 10 sick days, 8 paid federal holidays and up to 13 paid Jewish holidays, 6 weeks paid parental leave, Medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) plan and a 403(b) plan, housing benefit, additional health and wellness benefits, financial benefits, and tuition reimbursement. It also includes great professional development, mentoring, skill building opportunities and continued learning opportunities. Additionally, this position offers flexible work hours.

BASE PARTNER
The Base Partner is the spouse or partner of the Base Rabbi and is critical to the success of Base. Base is about welcoming young adults into a shared home and modeling what partnership can look like. Base Partners offer an alternative perspective and life experience to young adults to learn from, and we welcome partners from a wide variety of personal and professional backgrounds to this position. Base Partners are key thought partners in the building of the Base community and are expected to be an enthusiastic co-host, helping the planning and preparation of events and gatherings. To the extent Partners want to offer formal programming, we welcome their Jewish (and other) expertise.

The Base Partner will contribute to the local Base community using their particular strengths. This may include:

• Serving as the primary thought partner for the rabbi in building and developing the Base community - including formal and informal strategic planning discussions
• Hosting guests in the Base home for Shabbat and holiday meals
• Teaching and facilitating Jewish learning classes or gatherings
• Organizing service opportunities
• Welcoming new Basers into the community through one-on-one coffee dates
• Helping prep, plan, and host programs

Compensation and Benefits:

• Salary range is $15-20,000.
• Part-time, contracted for 10 hours per week.
