Position Summary

Skagit Valley College (SVC) is accepting applications for the Bilingual Information Technology Specialist. Under the general supervision of the Director of Information Technology, this position will follow the established guidelines and procedures and exercise independent judgment of assigned tasks to perform as the information technology specialist.

This position provides professional technical support for campus Academic and Administrative technology. It assists campus staff in selecting, procuring, and installing new technology. Respond quickly to classroom and security incidents as critical issues for the college, troubleshooting and diagnosing these complex issues. Provide COOP support for mission-critical personnel for the college. Create, update, and maintain desktop operating systems configurations, hardware, and software.

This is a 100% full-time, benefit-eligible, classified position at the IT department at our campus in Mount Vernon, WA. This position will have periodic evening and weekend responsibilities.

Nestled between the Cascade Mountains and Puget Sound in the northwest corner of Washington State, Skagit Valley College is located 60 miles north of Seattle and 80 miles south of Vancouver, BC. SVC was established in 1926 in Mount Vernon. Operating as one college with several campuses and centers, SVC serves Skagit, Island, and San Juan Counties with campuses in Mount Vernon and Oak Harbor, centers in Friday Harbor and Langley, and a Marine Manufacturing and Technology Center in Anacortes.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Information Technology Specialist will provide a variety of services from customer service to system support by performing the following duties:

Customer Service and Support

  • Respond to urgent user troubles and requests with patience, calm problem-solving, and technical solutions in a variety of situations including but not limited to network accounts, printing, audio-visual, conferencing, and file shares;
  • Supports decisions to determine what hardware upgrades are required based on emerging software and end-user requirements;
  • This position resolves reported classroom incidents in accordance with SLAs so that faculty can continue the primary mission of the college with minimal interruption;
  • Ensures customers receive current versions of supported software as they become available;
  • This position provides desktop systems that work consistently to support faculty and staff in advancing the mission of the college;
  • Creates and maintains documentation for common tasks, questions, and issues in English and Spanish.
Troubleshooting and Diagnosing Computer Systems
  • Perform incident response tasks according to procedures, including isolating affected systems and providing replacement systems;
  • Diagnose cyber infections, including origin, impact, and potential for continued infection;
  • Determine the best method for disinfecting and preventing future issues;
  • Diagnoses and resolves reported system incidents for end users;
  • Troubleshoots and corrects permissions and security group-based issues for local and cloud services including but not limited to: email, file server access, and single-sign-on cloud systems;
  • Troubleshoots desktop hardware and software issues. Escalates server or system issues to Tier 3 system administrator support staff.
Supervisory
  • May lead or supervise staff that provides customer support to our Spanish Language students and families.
Inventory
  • Maintains inventories and documentation for communication with campus on classroom issues;
  • Manages hardware and software obsolescence, including procurement, replacement, and disposal based on established replacement plans.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge or understanding of:
  • Windows Operating Systems and Microsoft Office;
  • Installing, maintaining, and supporting PC hardware, software, and peripherals;
  • Basic knowledge of Active Directory, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and WINS;
  • Knowledge of media and AV equipment;
  • Knowledge of Apple hardware and software;
  • Knowledge of Skagit Valley College's unique in-house developed applications, systems, and operational processes;
  • Desktop support in a higher education setting;
  • Understand and contribute to customer functional requirements.
Skill in:
  • Customer service skills;
  • Repair computers and local area networking diagnostics.
Ability to:
  • Communicate procedures and processes to non-technical users;
  • Utilize a variety of diagnostic procedures;
  • Work in a team environment;
  • Communicate effectively with non-technical users (orally and in writing);
  • Listen and accurately assess end user’s computing difficulties;
  • Plan and organize time and resources;
  • Prioritize workflow based on customer needs;
  • Work with a diverse population;
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Associate degree in Computer and Network Technology or two years experience in a desktop support position;
  • One year of customer service experience;
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in both English and Spanish.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Microsoft Certifications and CompTIA A+;
  • Experience supporting Apple computers and software.

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

Salary and Benefits:


  • Salary is based on Range 01IT, Step A, $4,758 per month with periodic increments to $6,244 per month. A 5% Multilingual Premium Pay, will be included at the time of hire. Starting salary may be dependent on education, qualifications, and experience. Salary and benefits are subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements.
  • This position is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • This is a union-represented position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
