Arches Bookhouse is a North Portland bookshop specializing in fine humanities books. We spread the joy of books on two fronts: curating an engaging and welcoming bookstore for in-person browsing and offering fine and rare books to scholars and collectors. We are seeking a part-time to full-time bookseller capable of operating on both fronts. This will be an entry-level position with room to grow as experience and skills increase. While prior bookselling experience is not necessary, customer service and data entry experience are welcome; extensive training will be provided. An ideal candidate would be interested in partnering to build community through the bookstore and gaining experience for long-term participation in the rare book trade.

Main Responsibilities:

- Interfacing with customers and “running the shop.”
- Pricing, shelving, and tidying the shop.
- Cataloging books (learning condition grading, bibliographical terminology and house style)
- Filling online orders, preparing items for shipping, maintaining online database, occasionally shipping books.

- Light cleaning and upkeep responsibilities
- All responsibilities are shared by Adam, Jim, Kendra, and multiple volunteers who make up the Arches team. Teamwork is essential.

Occasional Responsibilities:

- Assistance in packing and transporting large collections
- Packing and setup for book-fairs and other occasional events
- Handling purchase and pickup of shipping materials and other shop necessities.

Knowledge, Skills, Character:

- Commitment to treat all visitors and callers with respect, regardless of gender, race, or creed.
- Ability to work with ones hands, handling both heavy boxes (40 lbs) as well as carefully and precisely handling fragile materials.
- Strong communication, writing and typing skills.
- Ability to handle material with ideologies or language which you may find personally objectionable. We handle material across the religious, political, and moral spectrum, some of which may be controversial, provocative, or incendiary in nature.

- Ability to follow instructions, learn new things, and accept feedback and instruction.

This is ideally a full-time position with paid time-off, beginning in February.
We will entertain the possibility of a part-time position for the right candidate. Pay begins at $16/hr with scheduled raises as benchmarks are achieved.
