Job Description Summary:

Responsible for supervision of maintenance activities within of a highly automated food processing facility; responsible for building and utilities plus Zone B areas. Hire, train and oversee workers engaged in setting up, installing, and maintaining machinery and equipment and in fabrication of parts. Determine maintenance procedures in accordance with company operating policies and procedures. Maximize efficiency and availability of all equipment. Ensure compliance with safety, environmental sanitation, and applicable requirements.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and organizes preventive maintenance and safety inspection programs for all facilities and equipment
  • Reviews and rationalizes PM procedures, evaluates, and optimizes maintenance routines
  • Establishes schedules and methods for providing facility maintenance services; identifies resource needs
  • Monitors and controls supply and equipment, order supplies and tools as necessary
  • Assists workers in diagnosing malfunctions in machinery and equipment based on observation of machinery and applying knowledge from experience
  • Participates in the development of goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures; ensures implementation
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and developments in the field of facility maintenance; incorporates new developments as appropriate into programs
  • Makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies and procedures
  • Prepares specifications and contracts for contract services
  • Participates in the preparation and administration of the facility maintenance budget
  • Submits budget recommendations; monitors expenditures; prepares cost estimates; submits justifications for equipment; monitors budget expenditures
  • Prepares documents for equipment specification and procurement
  • Monitors maintenance work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures
  • Coordinates with contractors in providing contract services
  • Maintains the inventory of tools and common-use equipment
  • Reviews staffing needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly
  • Coordinates construction projects, remodels and other special projects as assigned
  • Ensures that plant safety rules are being followed and respected by direct-report employees and other plant employees
  • Conducts departmental safety meetings, participates actively in safety improvements, sets an example for safety leadership and excellence
  • Identifies shutdown projects, plans and allocates resources, manages execution of work and follow up with documentation and integration of equipment into established procedures
  • Trains and coach’s employees on maintenance techniques and procedures; provides training that covers equipment, techniques and procedures
  • Manages backlog of work orders through effective use of CMMS system
  • Evaluates employee performance to ensure quality and compliance with Operations and Quality Department’s standards
  • Assists employees with related administrative and human resources issues
  • Maintains time and attendance records and other necessary documentation
  • Investigates accidents and near-miss events, prepares follow-up reports
  • Follows all Good Manufacturing Practices as stated within the policy
  • Follows all Safety rules & procedures by working safely and ensuring safety of others
  • Follows all food safety procedures
  • Follows all environmental protocols as applicable
  • Follows all sanitation procedures and work instructions
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • AA or BS degree related to Maintenance or Engineering desired not mandatory
  • 5-10 years’ experience in plant maintenance with emphasis on utilities and building systems is a plus; experience in a food processing environment a plus
  • Experience in the supervision of Maintenance Technicians and management of contractor employees
  • Must be familiar with materials, methods, terminology, equipment, and tools used in the maintenance of industrial equipment
  • Experience with the construction of buildings and systems including those used in performing rough and finished carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, mechanical, and painting work
  • Basic principles and practices of budget preparation and administration
  • Equipment, tools and materials used in facility maintenance activities
  • Construction and project management principles
  • Principles and practices of safety management
  • Office procedures, methods and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Familiar with pertinent local, state and federal laws, ordinances, codes and rules
  • Read and understand construction drawings, plans and specifications
  • Organize, implement and direct facility maintenance operations and activities
  • Supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff
  • Interpret and explain pertinent department policies and procedures
  • Develop cost estimates for supplies and equipment
  • Perform the most complex maintenance duties and operate related equipment
  • Demonstrate tact and diplomacy with the public
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; AutoCAD and Rockwell Automation software; SAP experience a plus
  • Requires good written and oral communication skills to effectively interact with all levels of plant employees

Working Conditions:

Work is performed largely in a manufacturing environment. Hours of work will generally be during regular business hours with at least 40 hours a week. At times there will be some variation in work hours due to special projects, deadlines and other concerns. Occasional travel may be required.

Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
