Building Inspector (Apprenticeship)

The City of Moorhead is accepting applications for Building Inspector (Apprenticeship) in the Neighborhood Community Services Department.

The goal of the Building Inspector Apprenticeship is to provide knowledge and enhance career preparedness in the building inspection field by providing mentorship, training and classes with the goal to become certified as a Limited Building Official and potentially become a Building Inspector with the City of Moorhead in the future. The Apprenticeship is funded by the State and ends 12/31/2023. It is made possible by a generous grant by the State of Minnesota – Department of Labor and Industry.

Objectives:
  • Collaborate within the Building Inspection Team on plan reviews, inspections and identifying and addressing code compliance concerns.
  • Build relationships and gain experience in multiple areas within the building inspections field.
  • Gain expertise by attending multiple training courses to become well-versed in building, mechanical and plumbing inspections and reviews. Training courses and related travel are paid by the City.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Drivers license
  • Two years experience in the building construction, building design, building code enforcement, or related field.
  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft email, Outlook and Word
It is preferred, but not required, to have one or more of the following:

  • Vocational or trade school diploma (or higher) in building, construction, architectural, mechanical, or plumbing systems
  • One or more years experience in the installation or design of mechanical systems
  • One or more years experience in the installation or design of plumbing systems
Career Development Opportunities:
  • Inspections:
  • Gain experience in inspections and re-inspections of residential and commercial projects for compliance with building, plumbing or mechanical codes along with local laws and ordinances
  • Plan Review:
  • Develop an understanding of the plan review process for building construction to determine compliance with State and City codes for a variety of projects
  • Code Training:
  • Attend multiple trainings to learn multiple aspects of the codes and inspections fields, such as:
  • Accessibility Code
  • Building Design and Construction Standards
  • Plumbing, Building and Mechanical System Principles
  • Energy Systems and Codes
  • Communication:
  • Build verbal and written communication skills through a high level of interaction with various City offices and departments along with citizens, business owners and others
Hours: Full-Time with benefits. Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm. Flexible. This position will work inside and outside.
