Weekly Rate: Starting at $425-D.O.E.

Position Summary:

Unit Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. They are responsible for teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. They ensure the physical, mental, and emotional safety of campers.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the safety of all campers during their stay at Girl Scouts of Central Texas camps by following all policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their living unit, within activities and throughout camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
  • Leads and assists in the implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.
  • Works in conjunction with and assists the Unit Leader to ensure all weekly and daily paperwork is completed and turned in on time.
  • Ensures that unit schedules and activities are implemented.
  • Ensures that a safe and pleasant atmosphere is maintained in the assigned unit.
  • Performs check in and check out duties enthusiastically, ensuring parents feel secure in their camper staying at camp.
  • Creating a camp atmosphere where every camper is safe, has fun, and feels well liked by peers and staff
  • Encourages girl led programming beyond listed programming in the camp guide.
  • Work with and teach children ages six through seventeen.
  • Maintains high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff in accordance to Health Department regulations, GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints, and GSCTX policy and procedures.
  • Participates enthusiastically in all camper activities, including planning, developing, and leading those assigned.
  • Managing camper behavior, enforcing appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and applying appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with staff and creating harmonious relationships with campers, parents, and staff.
  • Ensure work areas and activities are safe and meet the requirements of the American Camp Association, Texas State Health Department, and GSCTX.
  • Provide quality camper experience that resolves concerns by offering creative solutions in a timely manner.
  • Promote and support the Girl Scout program philosophies of the GSUSA & GSCTX in a positive manner to the public and co-workers.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Assume other weekly duties and responsibilities as assigned, including participation in camper activities such as (but not limited to): cook out, check in, check out, all camp activities, themed days or meals, and duties at meals.
  • Assisting with daily, weekly, and end of season camp cleaning responsibilities.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by June 1, 2023.
  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • College coursework preferred.
  • Adherence to all Personnel Policies for Summer Camp Staff.
  • Exhibits mature and responsible behavior at all times.
  • Exhibits good judgment and risk management assessment skills.
  • Ability to work with, communicate with and teach children ages six through seventeen.
  • Continuous ability to work well on a team.
  • Camp experience preferred.
  • Experience in working with children ages six through seventeen preferred.
  • Knowledge of Girl Scout programming, awards, and culture preferred.
  • Must reside on camp property with campers in units.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending and twisting upper body.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50lbs.
  • Strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Must be able to physically participate in all activities on camp.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

  • Continuous outdoor activity and exposure to weather.
  • Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited equipment and facilities, with daily exposure to sun, heat, and insects.

OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Continuous requirement for professional demeanor and appropriate camp attire is expected at all times.
  • A criminal background check is required.
  • Continuous work as a team member and ability to work independently with some supervision.
  • Frequent work under stress and under pressure of deadlines with overlapping projects.
  • Continuous ability to work well with others.
  • Continuous ability to follow and enforce all Health & Safety guidelines.
  • Living in mostly indoor units with AC; some weeks may require living in non-AC units.
