Weekly Rate: Starting at $375-D.O.E.

Position Summary:

The lifeguard is responsible for the safety of campers and staff at all aquatic and waterfront facilities and activities. Lifeguards are expected to maintain lifeguard professionalism at all times. The Lifeguard adds to the harmonious camp operations by exhibiting positive camper engagement at and away from aquatic facilities.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the safety of all campers during their stay at Girl Scouts of Central Texas camps by following all policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Expected to maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff by lifeguarding in accordance to American Red Cross certification standards, American Camp Association Standards, and Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints.
  • Lifeguard assignments include free swims, kayaking, waterfront activities on trips and any other activity related to aquatic activities.
  • Daily record keeping of waterfront and pool facilities so that equipment and supplies are maintained in the best possible working order, repaired as needed, and supplies ordered in a timely manner.
  • Attend scheduled in service trainings.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Commitment to the continuous improvement of lifeguard skills in order to keep all campers and staff safe at aquatic activities.
  • Maintain lifeguard professionalism at all times, including lifeguard attire, behavior on and off stand, and getting proper food and rest.
  • Ensure work areas and activities are safe and meet the requirements of the American Camp Association, Texas State Health Department, and GSCTX.
  • Provide quality camper experience that resolves concerns in a timely manner.
  • Promote and support the Girl Scout program philosophies of the GSUSA & GSCTX in a positive manner to the public and co-workers.
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as delegated, including participation in camp programming outside of lifeguarding, the pool, or the waterfront such as non-water activities, cookout, check in, check out, and responsibilities during meals.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 16 years of age by June 1, 2023.
  • Meet qualifications outlined in Safety Activity Checkpoints.
  • Adheres to all Personnel Policies for Summer Camp Staff.
  • Current Lifeguard Certification from American Red Cross or ability to become certified before camp.
  • Experience as a lifeguard preferred.
  • Exhibits mature decision-making.
  • Exhibits good judgment and risk management assessment skills.
  • Ability to work with, communicate with and teach children ages six through seventeen.
  • Continuous ability to work well on a team.
  • Knowledge of Girl Scouts and Girl Scout camp preferred.
  • Must reside on camp property.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending and twisting upper body.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50lbs.
  • Strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to demonstrate the prerequisites for American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification:
      • Swim 300-550 yards via freestyle or breaststroke
      • Tread water for 2 minutes
      • Complete the timed brick test for lifeguards
      • Swim 15 yards underwater without surfacing

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

  • Continuous outdoor activity and exposure to weather.
  • Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited equipment and facilities, with daily exposure to sun, heat, and insects.
  • Willingness to live in camp facilities that may not have AC.
  • Willingness to be exposed to the sun and heat at the pool and on the lake.

OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Continuous requirement for professional demeanor and appropriate camp staff attire at all times.
  • A criminal background check is required.
  • Continuous work as a team member and ability to work independently with some supervision.
  • Continuous ability to follow and enforce all Health & Safety guidelines.
