SUMMARY
The HCC Campus Security Officer, in coordination with the Lead Security Officer, will be primarily responsible for maintaining a safe and inviting atmosphere in and around campus housing. Other duties will include securing buildings and protecting all areas and property of Highland Community College and the people who live, work, and/or visit Highland Community College. This position requires that the employee be trained on and carry a Taser during working hours.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Maintain a visible presence during evening and early morning hours in and around campus housing during the fall and spring semesters. Summer hours will fluctuate.

2. Assist in creating a safe environment for all students living in and visiting Highland Community College by establishing an invitational rapport with students and responding appropriately to students violating campus policies.

3. Write reports on all incidents occurring on campus, keep a work log, and submit reports on a daily basis to the Vice President for Student Services, Director of Residential Life, and other appropriate personnel.

4. Compile report data for the federal reports such as the Clery Act and the Campus Save Act. Send timely warnings via the campus alert system.

5. Patrol all buildings, grounds, and structures periodically checking for unauthorized entry, maintenance problems or machine failures.

6. Lock and unlock buildings as requested.

7. Maintain an open line of communication with the Vice President for Student Services and Director of Residential Life as well as any other departments who would benefit from information regarding problem areas on campus.

8. Investigate all reports of incidents such as theft, vandalism, etc. This includes gathering evidence, viewing camera footage, conducting interviews, collecting documents, and presenting evidence in disciplinary hearings.

9. Respond to campus emergencies. Activate campus early warning system if the situation warrants it.

10 Issue campus fines when appropriate.

12. Assist in creating security policies, regulations, and procedures.

13. Maintain Parking Permit documentation for entire campus; Patrol and enforce parking policy.

14. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.

15. Contribute to a team effort designed to increase student safety and retention in housing and on campus.

16. Report all security and safety deficiencies to the Director of Residential Life and Vice President for Student Services.

17. Check and keep documentation on all fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, emergency lighting and fire alarm systems in campus apartments on a monthly basis.

18. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Residential Life, Vice President for Student Services, and the President.

Education and/or Experience
Associate's degree or higher desired; three to six months related experience and/or training.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, employees.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables. Ability to interpret codes of conduct. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills
Ability to type reports and collect and enter minimal data on housing issues.

Other
  • Must have valid driver's license and clean driving record with no major violations over the past five years.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Must be able to undergo and pass Taser training.
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified (Can complete after hire)
  • Must be blood borne pathogen certified (Can complete after hire)
