JOB TITLE: Surgical Technician

SUPERVISOR: O.R. Supervisor

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:
Responsible for assisting licensed nursing personnel in the perioperative care of the patient in the operating room and performing technical duties as assigned.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Scrubs for assigned procedures, passes instruments, and assists physicians during surgical procedures.
2. Prepares room for surgical procedures, assembles supplies, instruments, and equipment.
3. Washes, packs, sorts, and wraps instruments in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
4. Assists in clean-up of rooms between procedures and at the end of the schedule.
5. Documents pertinent data on required forms in accordance with departmental policies.
6. Assists in monitoring and maintaining instruments, supplies, and equipment in the unit.
7. Acts appropriately in emergency situations by notifying and assisting clinical personnel.
8. Reports to supervisor any unusual occurrences, breaks in technique, malfunctioning equipment, any unsafe condition or potential hazard.
9. Attends inservice programs and keeps informed of current policies and procedures and standards of practice.
10. Contributes to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
11. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
Knowledge/Education: Knowledge of human anatomy, medical terminology, aseptic technique, and performing scrub and circulating duties as acquired through completion of a Surgical Technician course or its equivalent. Skill and proficiency in oral and written grammar, communication, and basic mathematics as acquired through official completion of high school or its equivalent. Knowledge of human growth and development necessary for assessment range of treatment, and care of patients appropriate to their ages as acquired through formal education course work.

Experience: Knowledge of sterile techniques, instrument or equipment identification, surgical procedures, and sterilizer operation as acquired through 3 to 6 months prior experience in a similar work environment.

Special Skills: Ability to perform CPR as required through certification in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Equipment: Not limited to, working knowledge of all patient care monitors, stretchers, IV poles, air powered equipment, autoclaves, telephone and paging systems, microscopes, lighting, lasers, computer systems, etc.

Licensure, Registration, Certification: Surgical Technician course or its equivalent. Certification is mandatory.
BLS is required.

Interpersonal Requirements: Interpersonal and oral communication skills to provide assistance to physicians on a continuous basis, to exchange information, and secure cooperation with patients and personnel in other departments on a frequent basis, and to provide information to families on an occasional basis. Interpersonal skills to obtain and interpret information appropriate to patient’s needs and ages as required for assessment, range of treatment, and patient care.

Essential Physical Requirements: Stands and walks for prolonged periods of time. Lifts and transports heavy patients, supplies, and equipment on a frequent basis.

Essential Environmental Conditions: Continuous exposure to blood and chemical solutions. Continuous exposure to human waste, secretions, sputum, infectious diseases, anesthetic gases, and heat from sterilizers.'
