Job Summary:

You are responsible for a specific group of children and the Assistant Teachers working with those children. You are in charge of developing and administering a developmentally appropriate program, which follow either the Infant and Toddler Guidelines for Learning and Development (for ages 18 months to 36 months) or the State of Maine Early Learning Guidelines (for ages 3-5 years) to assure that the needs of both the group as a whole and individual children are met. This position requires working as the leader of part of a classroom team, communicating with parents, filling the needs of young children, and light janitorial-type duties.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development preferred. A minimum of a CDA credential will be accepted.
  • Clean background checks through 1.) State of Maine Bureau of Investigation, Maine DHHS, and 2.) Child Protective Services, Maine DHHS.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Greet children and parents actively; make them feel welcome; gather information for the day, and share information with the parent about the child’s day when they depart;
  • Carrying out discipline in accordance with the BACCC discipline policy;
  • Supervising children outdoors for significant times during the day, year round;
  • Sitting on the floor to interact with children at their level;
  • Walking for distances of up to two miles;
  • Participating in off-site field trips;
  • Completing training in accordance with State regulations and BACCC policy, including on weekends or during evenings, if necessary;
  • Answering the telephone, taking messages, and forwarding calls to the appropriate person;
  • Communicating with other staff, both orally and in writing;
  • Contributing to team work by dealing with other staff respectfully and sharing common duties--following the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct;
  • Completing necessary paperwork (i.e. attendance records, anecdotal observations, developmental assessments, etc.);
  • Demonstrating flexibility when confronted with unplanned events and in work assignments and times;
  • Completing basic janitorial tasks, such as emptying wastebaskets, vacuuming, wiping tables, mopping floors, and cleaning bathrooms, in order to maintain a clean and healthy environment;
  • Changing diapers/pull-ups according to the BACCC diaper changing policy;
  • Conforming to the State of Maine Rules for the Licensing of Child Care Facilities, and the best-practice standards outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children;
  • Carrying out the daily routine and maintaining a consistent sequence of classroom activities;
  • Planning activities for the children which follow the Infant and Toddler Guidelines for Learning and Development / Maine Early Learning Guidelines;
  • Keeping the Director informed of sickness, accidents and injuries to children, significant physical and emotional development in the children, and any safety or health hazards present in or around the facility;
  • Sharing all pertinent information with other classroom staff;
  • Supervising assistant teachers, providing guidance and delegating responsibilities as appropriate;
  • Conducting parent-teacher conferences;
  • Maintaining an atmosphere and an environment where children have opportunities and are encouraged to discover, take risks, enjoy books and reading, express themselves, develop independence, and play appropriately in a group;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $14.25 - $14.50 per hour
