CITY PLANNER

$75,000.00-$95,000.00 annual salary, plus benefits

JOB SUMMARY

The primary purpose of this position is current planning functions, such as ensuring that applications for all development comply with applicable City codes and ordinances and State laws and are processed in accordance with approved procedures. Under general supervision from the City Manager, the Planner performs complex planning and land use activities for community development. The position is responsible for processes and planning activities related to the planning and zoning committee; assisting in a wide range of tasks and working to serve the interests of the City and its citizens. This is primarily a long-range planning position involved in comprehensive planning, research, and policy development. Additionally, this position presents to City Council and works directly with customers on development proposals, permitting, code compliance, and inquiries.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Reviews, manages and processes complex current planning requests/projects in conformance with the Comprehensive Plan, Development Code, and other adopted plans, studies, and development standards.
• Provides guidance and information to the developers and the public regarding various zoning and development-related regulations of the City.
• Prepares written reports and makes presentations to committees and the City Council.
• Serves as primary/first point of contact for the public. Responds to questions from citizens and city council providing assistance.
• Assists with special projects related to code revisions, manual updates, process review, and research, special use permits, variances and other proposals.
• Supervises, trains assigned staff members.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Completion of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Urban Planning, Architecture,

Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, or related field; and

• A minimum of two (2) years of experience with a local government or private planning firm.

• Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is required. Or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience which evidences a comprehensive knowledge of required job duties and expectations.
