The Community Relations Coordinator will report to the Social Lead in the project Social, Environmental and Regulatory Approvals (SERA) team. The role is responsible for coordinating and completing activities related to engaging communities local to Red Dog. At its core, this position will coordinate and participate in the variety of in-person, virtual, printed, electronic and oral engagement and information sharing and collaboration activities. The overall focus will be on strategic Red Dog projects, specifically for the definition, construction and operation of a new mine extension and water management projects.


To be successful in this role, we require someone with outstanding interpersonal, communication and organizational skills whose strength is building and maintaining relationships as you will be working with many internal and external partners. We are looking for someone who has strong leadership skills, is a motivated self-starter, and can collaborate well with a team in a multifaceted and sometimes challenging environment. Specific personality considerations are intrinsic respectfulness of cultural differences and interest in spending time with community members. You will have the opportunity to help craft the future of Red Dog Mine which is vital to Teck's ongoing success.


Flexibility is allowed in home base location; however, the incumbent will be expected to travel up to 40% of the time. Primary locations are Kivalina, Noatak, Kotzebue, the Teck Head Office in Vancouver, the regional offices in Anchorage, AK and Spokane, WA and Red Dog Mine in northwest Alaska. Trip durations will usually be no longer than 2 weeks but sometimes can be with limited notice.

Responsibilities:

  • Values align with Teck's corporate values and Indigenous People's Policy. This includes being a courageous safety leader, adhering to and sponsoring safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Coordinate community meetings and workshops
  • Schedule with community leadership, technical teams, and mine management
  • Logistics (chartering planes or booking flights, booking hotel rooms, booking meeting rooms, coordinating catering, etc.)
  • Prepare meeting materials (slides, handouts, and speaking notes)
  • Take notes, minutes and reports for meetings
  • Follow up with responsible people on action items from meetings and workshops
  • Other AAEP Project work
  • Work closely with the Project’s Environmental and Regulatory Approvals (ERA) and Engineering teams to understand key aspects to be comfortable explaining to community members in plain language
  • Assist with written project communication as needed
  • Work with graphics and communications teams for internal and external communication
  • Support the relationship initiative, Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), meaningful engagement, etc. in team meetings and planning sessions
  • Use TrackLine to enter and handle external communication and meetings
  • Help implement Teck’s policies and systems with the Project Team (e.g., Indigenous Peoples Policy, GISTM, HSEC management, etc.)
  • Collaborate with Red Dog Operations, especially the CR, Environment, and Tailings & Water teams

Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirement of a high school diploma or General Education Development Test
  • With a high school diploma or GED: 3 to 5 years of work experience or with a university degree: 1 to 2 years of work experience
  • Work experience specifically with Indigenous communities and/or organizations or in a natural resources industry, especially in Alaska or northern Canada are assets
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and influencing skills.
