Class Summary

Under close supervision, is responsible for performing entry-level engineering drafting, related computations, and computer-aided drafting design on a variety of City improvement projects; work is carried out under the supervision of an Engineer and is reviewed by continuous check and observation; performs other work as required.

Representative Duties

The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties:
Performs computer drafting of plans, profiles, cross-sections, and details of various City improvement projects; prepares designs and construction drawings from Engineers' sketches and notes; produces final plans and specifications by hand and computer suitable for multiple reproduction; assists Engineers with checking quantities and design computations and the accuracy of maps; answers telephone and counter inquiries regarding location of public utilities, property descriptions, and other matters as required; performs computer digitized mapping; produces quarter section maps, and specific layouts for survey use utilizing computer-aided drafting software; designs computer generated displays, charts, and graphs for City departments.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of: nomenclature, symbols, methods, practices, techniques, instruments, and equipment, as they apply to drafting; AutoCAD software, word processing and spreadsheet software.

Ability to: digitize drawings and draft using coordinates and bearings in AutoCAD; produce finished plans and drawings from rough sketches, diagrams, surveyor's notes, and field notes; assist with simple mathematical calculations of quantities and costs; prepare clear and accurate notes, diagrams, drawings, and reports.

Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and two years experience in computer-aided drafting or two years of college courses work in computer-aided drafting; or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described duties.

Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid Class "C" California Driver's License.

Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions:
Standard office environment and working conditions.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is an entry-level in the Computer Drafting Technician I/II flexible series and is differentiated from the II level by its trainee nature, requiring close, direct supervision. Promotion to Computer Drafting Technician II is considered on a merit basis without examination one year after appointment to fifth step subject to recommendation by the Department Head and approval by the Human Resources Manager.

VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
