Our COMMISSIONING STUDIO (Cx) team, in our Chicago, Illinois, office is seeking a Controls Commissioning Engineer. This role will support the Commissioning of all MEP building systems for a variety of new construction projects and existing buildings by validating concepts and functionally testing designs or current operation for all kind of systems and spaces.

Most duties will be performed in an office environment. dbHMS currently operates with both hybrid and remote-only work policies. The remainder of the duties will be performed in a combination of office environment and construction/field environment which will involve trips to projects sites.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, and frequently is required to walk. The work typically requires the use hands to type, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand and perform work in the field. The typical week consists of five, eight-hour shifts.
When in the field the employee must be able to climb stairs and endure typical construction site conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
Occasional overnight travel may be required depending on employee’s home location. Frequent local field visits in the office metro area will be necessary. A valid and clean driver's license is required.

Position Overview
Smart buildings and increasingly complex building automation systems are the future of the building industry. At dbHMS, you will be a part of the revolution in building automation and controls by helping to deliver optimally completed new-construction and existing building systems to clients with a vision for achieving industry-leading performance for sustainability, IAQ, human health and wellness, and lower life-cycle operating cost. Controls Commissioning Engineers participate actively in this sustainable mission by being an integral part of the Commissioning Team. You will be helping owners, general contractors, and other project team members in evaluating the design phase concepts, and with critical thinking help provide effective testing and communication through the construction and acceptance phases of the project. Controls Commissioning Engineers ensure that buildings work as designed, and, when problems occur, they identify implementable solutions that deliver value to our clients. Successful candidates will be familiar with and have a passion for learning the Commissioning (Cx) process, and for applying the fundamental concepts of Commissioning to new and existing building systems to achieve a more Green, Sustainable future for our built environments.
Essential Job Functions
The role requires a self-starter who is able to work independently both in a group office environment and in the field. The Controls Commissioning Engineer will develop skills and experience across all phases of the design and construction process, including:
  • Ability to review and test electronic/electrical circuitry for electronic and electrical/electro-mechanical control devices from design drawings, schematics, logic diagrams, or engineering instructions, including the ability to install, troubleshoot, and service various types of electronic controls.
  • Review building controls applications during the early planning phases of projects.
  • Be able to read and comment on the following for a project:
    • Owner’s Project Requirement comments and responses
    • Design Team’s Basis of Design
    • Sequence of Operations
    • Specification sections
    • Control schematics, wiring diagrams, and points lists
    • Pre-functional Checks and Functional Performance Tests
  • Support senior project engineers and commissioning providers by:
    • Reviewing manufacturer’s product submittals.
    • Reviewing controls contractor’s submittals/shop drawings.
  • Write and perform system testing scripts and witness demonstrations.
  • Investigate post-occupancy issues and identify implementable solutions.
  • Analyzing building performance data for identifying possible improvements.
  • Evaluate current system monitoring capabilities and suggest enhanced means of capturing the necessary information to achieve optimal operation.
Requirements
  • 4+ years of engineering, HVAC field experience, controls, or commissioning work experience overseeing the design, installation, and/or start-up of HVAC, electrical, life safety, building automation, lighting, or other building systems.
  • Strong desire to learn about differing controls strategies for multiple types of systems.
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of seemingly disparate information, test for proper operation, identify issues, then communicate findings effectively to other team members.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or any related degree with an emphasis on building systems and their operation, or the equivalent in experience plus education.
  • Specialty skills, experience, and/or certifications connected to sustainability project drivers such as LEED, WELL, CEM, USGBC, CBCP, ASHRAE, BCA, AEE, Energy Star, or any connections to similar sustainable programs.

Compensation and Advancement
Position Reports to: Commissioning Studio Leader
Next Advancement: Senior Commissioning Project Manager E-3
Salary Range: $75,000 to $95,000 Base Salary, depending on experience
