General Statement of Duties:

Assistant transfer students in all aspects of their transition to the university. Provide academic support and administrative advising to students.

General Summary:

The position reports directly to the Director of the Center for Student Success and is responsible for administering a comprehensive system of transcript evaluation for both domestic and international first-year students who are bringing in transfer credit The position informs, advises, and assists matriculated transfer students regarding the final process of articulating their transfer credits to ensure timely progress towards graduation . The position is responsible for advising and processing registration for incoming transfer students in conjunction with other staff in the Center for Student Success. The position serves as the success advisor to transfer students. On occasion, some evening/weekend hours, may be required.

Transfer Advising Responsibilities

Serves as an information resource to students, faculty, and staff by maintaining knowledge of transfer articulation agreements and other transfer requirements and regulations

  • Helps the university provide a coordinated approach to transfer student issues by working cooperatively with the Admissions Office, especially with the Director of Transfer Admissions, publishing material of interest to transfer students, communicating with college deans and department chairs regarding the transferability of courses, and working as a member of the Center for Student Success.
  • Ensures a smooth transition for transfer students enrolling at the University of New Haven by meeting individually as needed with incoming transfer students and providing them with general orientation information, providing general guidance to transfer student in their first semester at the University. Works with matriculated transfer students in conjunction with Admissions Office to resolve issues with college deans and department chairs regarding the transferability and placement of courses in their degree program.
  • Discusses degree completion options and interprets core requirements for each major with admitted transfer students.
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive and current knowledge of academic resources, policies, and processes necessary for the successful completion of undergraduate degrees.
  • Represents the department together with Undergraduate Admissions with respect to transcript equivalency issues with other institutions.
  • Review TCE’s (Transfer Credit Evaluation) for possible substitutions for core and act as advocate to the UUCC (University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee) for approval of core substitutions
  • Enters all approved transfer equivalency credits for first year students into the ERP database per the Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE), AP scores, CLEP and all other approved transfer credits.
  • In conjunction with Admissions, responds to internal and external inquiries and maintains regular contact with department chairs concerning equivalencies, articulation agreements, student questions, preliminary unofficial transcript equivalencies, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Success Advisor Responsibilities

  • Assess and monitor student progress using EAB Navigate, Student Success Collaborative. Intervene as needed to promote student success and provide support to students. Maintain accurate record of meetings and correspond with faculty in reference to student alerts received.
  • Keep informed of all university policies and resources; provide guidance on interpreting university policy, degree audit, the registration process and other administrative advising functions
  • Teach in the Strategies for Success and/or Foundations for Success Programs.
  • Guide students through assessments to assist in their overall academic success (e.g., Learning Styles, using metacognition, Bloom’s Taxonomy)
  • Counsel students in using and understanding academic advising tools such as Degree Works, Banner, and academic worksheets
  • Deliver accurate information and advice to students about majors/minors and course options
  • Make appropriate referrals to academic departments and other university resources
  • Respond with appropriate interventions for those students who are experiencing academic difficulty
  • Keep informed of all academic worksheets and program requirements
  • Participate in new student, registration, and orientation programs; schedules and/or registers new first-year and transfer students for classes prior to their first semester on campus
  • Act as referral source and student advocate

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related academic or counseling and student personnel; experience in working with students in a higher education setting. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of, commitment to, and expertise at building rapport with students from diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, and socio-economic and other backgrounds
  • Commitment to student-centered advising team approach
  • Ability to resolve student issues from request to resolution
  • Understanding the academic and developmental needs of college students
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others to accomplish team goals
  • Experience in Appreciative Advising/Certification preferred; willingness to pursue certification if hired
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, manage databases)
  • Familiar with electronic methods of communication (i.e.; online chat, webinars, social networking sites
  • Strong communication/counseling and organizational skills)
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Experience in dealing with confidential materials and information
  • Ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, and administrators on campus
  • Occasion evening and weekend hours required
  • All related duties as assigned by supervisor or Director of the Center for Academic Success and Advising
