WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The Government Affairs Coordinator reports directly to the Director, Interlocal Government Affairs. The Government Affairs Coordinator provides administrative and logistical support for the Government Affairs team, including maintaining processes, systems, communications, and information tailored to the needs of the team. In addition to the specific requirements, the coordinator should process a high work standard, the ability to learn quickly, and be adept at setting priorities and anticipating needs to develop greater regional consensus for issues to increase support for transit.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Monitor, track, research, and analyze comprehensive transportation-related issues and legislation and determine the potential impact on CapMetro and Austin Transit Partnership.
  • Assist in the development of CapMetro’s official position regarding government policies.
  • Monitor and track local city council hearings, committee meetings, and commissioners’ courts, as well as other governing bodies in the CapMetro service area and provide weekly/monthly reports on related subjects.
  • Monitor Congressional hearings, general sessions, and national transportation organizational meetings. Disseminate information to Government Affairs team and staff.
  • In coordination with key agency departments, participate in the research of the availability of federal and state grants that would bring potential funds for capital projects and special programs. Oversee the documents and application process of grant requests.
  • Assist in the development, research, and coordination of the government affairs’ work programs, special projects, policies related to transportation, and other components.
  • Respond to requests for transportation-related information from internal and external affiliates, stakeholders, elected officials, community-based organizations, or nonprofit groups.
  • Ensure that stakeholders and elected officials have the opportunity to provide input to the programs of the agency prior to key milestone decisions being made.
  • Assist in meeting management including developing and preparing materials, sending invitations, coordinating logistics, and other associated tasks for various events.
  • Support Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Safety Management Systems (SMS) process by following safety and security policies, considering safety in every action and reporting safety and security concerns.
  • Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Government, Planning, Public Relations or related field. Related experience may substitute for educational requirements on a year for year basis up to four (4) years.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in legislative research, planning, and/or analysis.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Applications, database, and other software.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Advanced skills in research, evaluate and interpret complex information.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees, media representatives, the CapMetro Board of Directors, the public and all parties, both inside and outside of CapMetro in a diverse, socio-economic, and cultural environment.
  • Analytical and creative experience to find solutions to complex problems.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, able to present images and ideas in a clear, concise, organized, and interesting manner to optimize audience understanding and keep the group focused.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, work calmly under tight deadlines, organize time effectively, and identify resources for projects.
  • Pay attention to detail, focus on strategic priorities, and be proactive.
  • Excellent ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with a diverse population.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of policy development, methodologies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service, customer relations, problem solving, and utilize tools for use in conflict management.
  • Working knowledge of transportation principles and methods for moving people and goods.
  • Ability to collaborate and cooperate with others; build effective working relationships with internal and external members to accomplish organizational goals.
  • Effective planning and strategic management skills.
  • Ability to produce professional documents.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, evenings, and weekends when necessary.
