The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for the position of Coordinator of Multicultural Student Life. Reporting to the Assistant Director or Multicultural Student Life, the Coordinator works closely with multiple student organizations to coordinate programs and services that impact student engagement and success. This position is responsible for advising student organizations and assisting students in the planning, production, and assessment of programs. This position provides direct supervision for a graduate assistant.

The Position: The Coordinator of Multicultural Student Life assists the Assistant Director in advising and providing guidance to several student organizations associated with the department. This position assists in the planning, production, marketing, and assessment of programs and activities; host weekly, and in some cases bi-weekly, meetings with student organizations and student organization leaders. The coordinator organizes annual conferences and cultural celebrations, develops initiatives focused on supporting and expanding programs and services for under-represented student populations as well as collaborate with faculty, professional staff, and students to develop and deliver cultural programs and services to various majors, classes, organizations, and departments. This position negotiates contractual terms with agents, manages student organization member recruitment and selection process and assists in the training of graduate assistants and practicum/internship students. The coordinator position creates and compiles program/event statistics each semester for the annual report. This position represents the office at Division of Student Life events, serves on various campus committees to support the current and development of new programs and resources for underrepresented and marginalized student populations. The coordinator position engages in professional development activities and trainings to maintain current knowledge of cultural, social justice, and inclusion theories, techniques, and assessments.

What We Require:

Education: This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree.

Experience:

  • 1 year direct experience (professional or paraprofessional) working with students in a higher education setting. Master's degree may substitute for 1 year of experience. 2 years as a graduate assistant may substitute for 1 year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to successfully perform managerial responsibilities (planning, organization leadership, budget, personnel, program evaluation, facility management, and operations) in a complex regulatory, legal, policy, and political environment
  • Knowledge of identity development and the impact of intersections of identities as it relates to college students
  • Ability to develop innovative programming for underrepresented and marginalized student populations
  • Knowledge of issues related to diverse campus community
  • Ability to develop programming that will support university recruitment and retention goals
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments concurrently
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment.

What We Prefer:

Education: Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or a related field

Experience:

  • Direct experience working with underrepresented and marginalized student populations
  • Experience advising student organizations
  • Experience developing & delivering programs in a college setting
  • Experience teaching courses
  • Experience leading and facilitating workshops and trainings.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of best practices in the field
  • Ability to utilize relevant technologies in the delivery of student programs
  • Ability to utilize higher education assessment models.

Salary: The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and other qualifications and is accompanied by a standard university benefits package. This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position.
