Association Reports to/Supervised by: Custodial Supervisor ===================================================================== ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include but are not limited to the following. Other job-related duties may be assigned A. MAINTAIN A CLEAN CLASSROOM by  Sweeping, dust mopping, spot/wet mopping or vacuuming classroom floors  Dusting furniture  Cleaning chalkboards  Cleaning entryway and classroom door glass  Emptying trash receptacles  Changing trash receptacle liners  Removing all graffiti  Changing light bulbs that can be safely changed B. MAINTAIN AND KEEP OUTSIDE AREAS SAFE by  Reporting necessary repairs to supervisor or building principal  Insuring safety of entryways, walks and driveways during inclement weather by removing snow or ice and applying sand, deicer or salt as deemed necessary  Maintaining clean building entrances and exits  Maintaining grounds if assigned to a site requiring this responsibility. C. ASSIST IN MAINTAINING BUILDING SECURITY by  Insuring that exit doors are working properly  Opening the building and making the building ready for students and staff and/or securing and locking all entrances not needed for evening events at the end of the regular school day  Securing building doors and windows at the end of the last shift daily  Reporting any violent student situation to a teacher or supervisor D. MAINTAIN CLEAN AND SAFE PUBLIC AREAS by  Maintaining clean and dry floors by sweeping, dust mopping, vacuuming, spot mopping and scrubbing areas using appropriate equipment and supplies  Buffing floors  Cleaning glass surfaces regularly  Removing stains and spills as necessary (marking off and taking care of trip and slip hazards)  Cleaning interior fixtures in building  Cleaning lockers and other furnishing  Shampooing carpets  Stripping, scrubbing and refinishing floors E. MAINTAIN CLEAN AND SAFE LAVATORY FACILITIES AND LOCKER ROOMS by  Cleaning and disinfecting floors, toilets and all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains  Collecting and disposing of all paper garbage  Maintaining all paper supplies and soap dispensers F. MAINTAIN A SAFE AND COMFORTABLE BUILDING ENVIRONMENT by  Striving to be attentively aware of changes in the surrounding area in order to quickly recognize and report problems, accidents and equipment or system failures to supervisor  Monitoring safety devices on a boiler or furnace, changing filter, checking and maintaining exit lamps, fire extinguishers, motors, heating units, etc. if properly trained and assigned to a site requiring this responsibility  Playing an active role in creating a safe and healthy workplace through compliance with applicable safety and health rules.  Performing minor repairs, i.e., adjusting desk or chair height, hanging shades, installing pencil sharpeners. G. ASSIST ACTIVITY COORDINATORS AND ACTIVITY SUPERVISORS by  Setting up and cleaning areas needed for event(s)  Collecting and removing trash H. ASSIST LUNCH STAFF by  Setting up and taking down lunch tables  Removing trash  Sweeping and scrubbing lunchroom floor I. MAINTAIN A COOPERATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH STAFF AND SUPERVISORS by  Establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work  Communicating effectively with those contacted in the course of work J. MAINTAIN A HIGH LEVEL OF ETHICAL BEHAVIOR AND CONFIDENTIALITY OF ANY INFORMATION REGARDING STUDENTS, PERSONNEL AND ALL JOBRELATED MATTERS. K. TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES: Works independently with infrequent supervisory instruction; occasionally needs to assist substitute custodians. ______________________________________________________________________________ MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Licensure and Certification  High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred  Completion of Adult Education Boiler Course or Low Pressure Boiler’s License preferred if assigned to a site requiring this training Experience  One year prior custodial experience preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  Knowledge/practice of safety rules and procedures including but not limited to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) preferred.  Special knowledge, skills and abilities in proper care and maintenance of tile and carpet floor finishes preferred  Knowledge of the appropriate use of custodial cleaning/maintenance equipment preferred  Special knowledge, skills and abilities in the cleaning and lubrication of heating and ventilation units, excluding maintenance of mechanically advanced filters preferred, if assigned to a site requiring this responsibility  Ability to read and follow directions correctly  Ability to organize and maintain assigned area with little supervision  Ability to successfully fulfill assigned performance responsibilities  Ability to be flexible; daily tasks are prioritized  Problem-solving skills  Ability to understand and carry out oral or written instructions  Ability to handle stressful situations  Ability to prioritize tasks and adjust work schedules to accommodate competing demands  Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities  Ability to establish and to maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, to include students, staff and the public.  Ability to operate specialized cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment  Ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds  Basic computer skills or the ability to learn basic computer skills, if appropriate  Ability to communicate effectively with students staff and the public  Ability to work effectively without close supervision PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job the employee is often required to do the following for long periods: standing, sitting, walking, bending, lifting and/or carrying up to 50 lbs. occasionally, 35 lbs. frequently, bending, climbing stairs or ladders, kneeling, pushing heavy equipment, reaching and/or lifting extending arms overhead and above shoulder height, twisting at the neck and waist. Specific corrected vision abilities include: close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to change focus. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp. The employee often performs routine work. MENTAL/MOTOR DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee often performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). The employee frequently works within time constraints and must maintain attentiveness intensity and be vigilant in order to avoid injury or illness. Guidance and reinforcement are usually unavailable. The employee may be involved in interactions which require oral and written communications. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job include: working inside and outside, exposure to a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions, meeting deadlines with severe time constraints, working alone or as a member of a team, working in buildings that are sometimes crowded. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be noisy depending on the task at hand. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may be exposed to biological agents. The physical demands, work-environment characteristics, and mental/motor demands described within this job description are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
