The Position

The Contra Costa County Public Works Department is offering an excellent opportunity to fill a temporary Custodian II position. This position is 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday, and does NOT include benefits.

The Public Works Department has an organizational culture that strives for continuous improvement. Our mission is to deliver cost-effective, safe, reliable, and sustainable services for the Contra Costa County community. Public Works maintains 660 miles of roads and 150 miles of streams; channels and other drainage facilities as well as maintains 93 county buildings.

We are currently looking to add four (4) Custodian II – Temporary personnel to join our dedicated team.

We are looking for someone who is:


  • Experienced.
    You will be performing custodial or janitorial work in an office or commercial setting.
  • Able to follow written and verbal instructions. You will be responsible for understanding instructions that come your way from various departments.
  • Honest. You should have a proven track record of ethical behavior.
  • Knowledgeable in cleaning. You will be responsible for cleaning commercial carpets and commercial floors.
  • Customer service oriented. You will have face-to-face interaction with various customers and great customer service is expected.
What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Cleaning, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors
  • Vacuuming and cleaning carpets
  • Washing ceilings and walls
  • Dusting, cleaning, and polishing furniture and building fixtures
  • Disinfecting and cleaning fountains and restrooms
  • Operating electric scrubbers, buffers, and vacuum cleaners
  • Emptying waste baskets, recycle bags, and trash containers

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.

Experience: One (1) year of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience performing custodial maintenance in a commercial, industrial or public agency.

Background: Must pass a background investigation.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience using floor cleaners/buffers and other custodial equipment
  • A proven track record of working independently with minimal supervision
  • Customer service experience
  • Experience using various cleaning products

Selection Process

  • Application Filing and Evaluation: Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
  • Departmental Hiring Interview: Tentatively scheduled for 12/07/2022

CONVICTION HISTORY

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
