Darkroom Technician

The Harvey Milk Photo Center, part of the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department (SFRPD) offers public photography classes in various mediums for teens, adults and seniors. The mission of the Cultural Arts division of SFRPD is to ensure accessible and affordable arts offerings are available for all. The Recreation and Park Department’s goal is to close the gaps and improve equity and access to quality parks and open space, and recreation activities for historically marginalized communities.

We are looking for a darkroom technician to assist photography students/members during open lab times for approximately 10-15 hours per week. Days, times, and hours are negotiable and may include weekdays, weekday evenings, and weekends.

Our position is temporary, part- time, generally 10-15 hours per week.

Responsibilities include:

- Experience working in a film darkroom

- Open and/or close photography facilities, as scheduled

- Ensure that the conditions in the classroom, darkroom, studio, and equipment storage areas are kept neat, clean, orderly, and are properly functioning during open lab time

- Report to the Photo Center Director when supplies need to be ordered or equipment is broken, not functioning, or missing

- Supervise student/member activities during open lab periods. This includes the computer lab, darkroom, and film processing area

- Assist students/members in the processing of negatives and prints, computer issues (software and hardware)

- Replenish chemistry and consumables

- Clean trays, containers, sinks, print washers, and floors in the darkroom area

- Ability to interact with students/members and staff in a courteous and helpful manner

- Perform the duties as assigned by the Photo Center Director

- Proficiency with Adobe Photo Editing Software - Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Bridge, and Photoshop is preferred but not required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

- Experience working in a wet darkroom

- Familiarity with film processing, printing (all formats) and finishing

- Available to work afternoons, evenings and/or weekends

- Reliable, team player, communicative, willing to learn new skills, friendly and outgoing

Everyone must already possess a High School Diploma/GED (verified by either an official/unofficial institutional transcript or diploma/certificate) AND have at least the specific hours of qualifying experience* for each level outlined below:

Recreation Leader I $19.55 (eff 1/8/22)

* 500 hours of qualifying recreation experience delivering instruction/programs

Recreation Leader II $22.59 (eff 1/8/22)

* 1,000 hours of direct experience delivering recreation, cultural or athletic instruction/programs.

Recreation Leader III $30.09 (eff 1/8/22)

* 1,000 hours of direct experience delivering recreation, cultural or athletic instruction/programs* AND hold a certificate in the specific area of expertise issued by a recognized professional organization (substitutions subject to approval) required by our department.
