Job Description


Tour II: (9:00am - 5:00pm)

Purpose of Position:

Under the supervision of the Director of General Dentistry, or his designee, perform the duties of a Dental Assistant.

Areas of Responsibilities:

The Oral & Maxillofacial Program at NYC H+H Kings County.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Dentist or Oral Surgeon, under the direct supervision of the Dentist or Oral Surgeon.
  • Prepares the patient prior to treatment by seating the patient (escorting the patient to and from the Treatment Room) and then draping the patient.
  • Sterilize instruments which includes, washing and disinfecting, operating the sterilizer, monitoring the sterilizer and recording the packaging of instruments in preparation for sterilization. All in accordance with the policies and procedures as set forth by Central Sterile Supply.
  • Takes X-Rays, to include, periapical and bite wings, Panorex, prepare the x-ray cassettes for the Panorex, change the x-ray developing liquids.
  • Assume chair side duties to include, assist the dentist or oral surgeon with surgery, maintain the equipment, disinfect the dental operatory between patients, change the hand pieces between patients, break down used trays prior to sterilization, pour study models and trim, maintain the inventory of supplies and organize the cabinets.
  • Assist with Ambulatory Surgical Procedures by giving pre and post op instructions, monitor the patients' vital signs, maintain anesthesia and invasive procedure records, prepare and break down the room between patients,
  • Prepare procurement requisitions for E.D. specific medical-surgical supplies and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications


1. A four year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by a course of study consisting of at least 600 instructional hours at an approved school for Dental Assistants; or
2. A four year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by a course of study consisting of at least 300 instructional hours at an approved school for Dental Assistants plus six months full-time satisfactory experience as a Dental Assistant performing all of the following duties: taking, developing, and mounting dental radiographs, assisting dentist at chairside, sterilizing dental instrument using autoclave; or
3. A four year High School diploma or its educational equivalent plus one year of full-time satisfactory experience as a Dental Assistant performing the duties described in 2 above; or
4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience which is equivalent to 1, 2, or 3 above. However, all candidates must have at least a four year High School diploma or its educational equivalent.
Experience as a receptionist or clerk in a dentist's office is not acceptable towards meeting the qualification requirements.

Department Preferences


Excellent written, verbal and customer service skills preferred.

Bilingual preferred.

At least six (6) years dental assistant experience preferred.
