Job Details
The Detention Deputy is responsible for care, control, and movement of inmates. This position performs job
assignments according to the established policies and procedures in accordance with the MN Department of
Corrections rules and the requirements and ICE policies and procedures.
- Conducts the admission and release of inmates which includes accurately identifying
and personal property; identifying medical needs; assists in the classification required for
housing inmates; and verifying the release criteria has been met.
- Performs basic maintenance of facility.
- Assists in training new staff, updating probationary staff training manual, orientating
- Ensures the well-being of inmates performing signs of life-checks, dispensing medication,
- Mediates disputes between inmates and releases inmates for Huber work.
- Maintains order and safety in the Detention Center to include conducting security
controlling weapons, and overseeing visitation.
- Performs clerical duties that includes recording inmate dispositions and writing inmate status reports.
- Collects and records fines, bail, bonds, Huber payments, booking fees, and inmate money.
- Responsible for managing the day to day needs and activities of inmates and ensuring rights
- Assists in supervising inmates to assure accordance with conditions conducive to good

- First Aid/CPR certification
Equipment and Tools Responsibilities
- Intermittently operates County vehicles.
- Operates office equipment.
- Intermittently use the restraint chair.
- Continuously carries taser, chemical spray, baton and other tools on belt.
Physical and Mental Requirements
This job typically requires: sitting, standing, walking, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing,
typing, and seeing. This position may encounter unexpected and prolonged workdays and stress and
pressure from dealing with emotional issues and conflicts. This position may experience threats of
trauma, assault, and offensive language. This position is exposed to airborne particles and bloodborne
pathogens. There is exposure to computer keyboards and video screens. This position is generally light duty
and may require the exertion up to 20 pounds of force and intermittently ability to lift, carry, push, pull
and move objects over 60 pounds, or assist with moving inmates weighing up to several hundred pounds.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a direct supervision jail environment. This position is exposed to inmates detoxing
off of drugs, mental health emergencies, violent, and unstable inmates. There is a considerable risk when
dealing with inmates. There may be travel required to other facilities, meetings training, etc.
