Direct Support Professional

Young woman in Takoma Park with developmental differences is looking to expand her team to include a DSP for part-time companionship and care. The position is around 5-15 hrs/week which could expand to more hours in the future.

We are looking for someone who would be excited to develop an empathic and active relationship and who believes that everybody has basic human rights to respect and self-determination. Being a part of the team would include doing activities that she finds interesting and fun(music, walking, going to the pool and being outdoors), maintaining an active and engaged lifestyle, supporting her strengths and also challenging her to continue to grow. We're definitely looking for folks who can stay gentle and calm during times of distress.

The young woman needs support in all activities of daily living, so working with her includes helping her to eat, clean up after meals and playtime, do meal planning and food preparation, walk, get dressed and changed, tidy her room, and so on.

No training or experience with people with developmental differences is required. We will help you get to know and understand her. What we're looking for is kindness, warmth, enthusiasm, empathy, playfulness, and patience.

Compensation is $24/hr. In addition, for those who work 10 or more hours per week, there are 32 hrs/year of paid sick & safe leave. We prioritize your time off, sick leave, and vacations.

Requirements:
-gently handle outbursts that include yelling, scratching, biting
-comfort with the intentional community we live in (10+ people, garden, compost, etc.)
-have a car and can drive to activities (you will be reimbursed for mileage)
-can comfortably walk 2 miles a day
-able to lift 80 lbs
-CPR and First Aid certification
-no perfumes or artificial fragrances
