Scope:
Responsible for the organization’s overall financial plans and policies, accounting practices, the conduct of its relationship with lending institutions and funding agencies, purchasing, and insurance activities for the agency. The Director of Accounting is responsible for the maintenance of the agency’s financial data in order to provide management with accurate information necessary for delivering high- quality services to low-income people.
Essential Functions
Establish and implement policies, procedures, and systems necessary to maintain proper financial records and to afford adequate accounting controls and services. Remain abreast of state-of-the-art accounting practices and changes in federal regulations necessary to insure policies and procedures meet current standards.- Select and oversee the installation and operation and maintenance of an automated accounting system and software applications. Periodically review the system in place and make upgrades and changes as necessary by changes in the agency operation.
- Direct, consolidate, and analyze all cost accounting procedures together with other statistical and routine reports, including monthly departmental reports.
- Direct agency purchasing to include appropriate bidding processes, establishing the most economical purchase quantities, negotiating purchase contracts, following up and expediting deliveries, receiving materials and supplies, and maintaining purchase records.
- Direct the maintenance of agency inventory records to meet current acceptable accounting practices and funder specifications.
- Provide day-to-day supervision and direction to assigned staff including but not limited to: scheduling staff; evaluating performance; evaluating staff development needs and determining appropriate training or coaching; and resolving staff conflicts.
- Provide technical financial advice and knowledge to colleagues and staff.
- Prepare and assist in month- and year-end closings.
- Prepare and assist in preparation for year-end audit and funding source monitoring visits.
- Maintain a positive attitude towards assigned work, clients, and staff, and a willingness to work with others.
- Execute other specific tasks as assigned; some of which are continuing, while others are occasional in nature.
- Monitor on-going spending and make budget adjustment recommendations as necessary.
- Perform work in a manner that upholds Wayne Metro policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a professional office environment with a usually quiet noise level. This is largely a sedentary role and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, frequently use hands and to talk or hear.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance or a minimum of ten years experience in accounting management or a combination of education and experience which is similarly appropriate.
- An active CPA certification a plus. Masters degree preferred.
- Minimum of five years of experience in nonprofit accounting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Excel Word and PowerPoint. MIP accounting software is beneficial or other spreadsheet software packages.
- Ability to organize a variety of simultaneous activities with attention to detail and timeliness.
- Good interpersonal and professional skills including but not limited to professional appearance, tact, punctuality, communication, and dependability.
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
Minimum Competencies:

Working knowledge of intermediate internet applications and programs including Google technology and Microsoft Office Word and Excel. The ability to learn and utilize the necessary programs for this position.

Licensing and Other Requirements:

Valid identification and reliable transportation.

Work Hours:
Work schedule is Monday – Friday, with specific hours (and occasional Saturdays) to be determined by department needs.
