Colorado Academy seeks a talented and driven individual to serve as the school’s next Director of Advancement. The Director of Advancement at Colorado Academy (CA) provides leadership for fundraising, communications, and external relations with parents, alumni, donors, and community partners. Reporting directly to Head of School Mike Davis, the Director of Advancement & External Affairs will serve as a thought partner and strategic leader to ensure the coordination of all fundraising and communications activity to ensure these programs reach their full potential.

The ideal candidate is a dynamic leader with excellent people skills, who engages professionally with all the school’s constituencies. Possessing qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the school’s mission, CA’s Director of Advancement must be flexible, able to multitask, and able to manage a fast-moving environment. The role works closely with our Office of Inclusivity to ensure all fundraising efforts, communications, and events reflect CA’s commitment to DEI and providing a sense of belonging for all members of the school community.

Requirements


Responsibilities for the Director of Advancement include oversight of the school’s annual fundraising efforts in keeping with the school’s budget objectives and long-range planning. Working in conjunction with the Advancement team, this role will support the school’s long-term financial stability by designing and implementing strategies for raising funds to support current and future operations. Special attention will be paid to the coordination of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of Colorado Academy constituents for the various fundraising initiatives.
This role will provide oversight of all communications including web-based communications and social media, digital and print marketing materials, and consistent message development that enables CA to continue advancing its mission, purpose, and brand.

This individual shall oversee the gathering and utilization of constituent feedback for the purposes of strategic planning and shall oversee events used for promotion of the school to both internal and external audiences including the school’s SPEAK lecture program. This individual also shall be responsible for fostering key community partnerships.

Direct reports for the Director of Advancement include those responsible for The CA Fund (annual campaign), Major Gifts, Alumni Relations, Events, Gift Processing and Database Management, Marketing and Communication Content and Strategy, Digital Media, and Web Communications.

Responsibilities include:

Fundraising
  • Provide clear vision, supervisory leadership, and collaboration with the Development team.
  • Oversee development of an annual fundraising plan and budget based on Trustee and administration priorities.
  • Ensure that resources are in place to support the school’s long-term financial stability by designing and implementing strategies for raising funds to support current and future operations.
  • Oversee all planning for the school’s fundraising efforts, including The CA Fund (annual campaign), endowment, special projects, and planned giving. Develop strategies for increasing annual fundraising goals.
  • Represent the fundraising program at the senior administrative level and with the Board of Trustees.
  • Identify, cultivate, and steward key donors and develop strategies to expand the current base of philanthropic revenue sources for the school.
  • Oversee the gift reporting, acknowledgments, accounting, and data management of the Development office.

Communications
  • Communicate a broad understanding and awareness of the values articulated in Colorado Academy’s Mission Statement and core values.
  • Plan and implement—in cooperation with the Communications and Marketing team, Head of School, and the Director of Admissions—a comprehensive long-range marketing plan including outreach into the community and internal and external communications. Review, evaluate, and update this plan annually.
  • Work with Communications team (currently two people) to:
  • Direct content strategy, presenting CA’s mission through compelling narratives and storytelling.
  • Drive the creation and execution of integrated marketing and communications efforts—both print and digital.
  • Maintain positive relationships with current and prospective families, faculty and staff, and alumni through consistent, accurate, informative, and timely communications.
  • Have sophisticated understanding of available communications platforms and recognize which is best to share information depending on the circumstance.
  • Serve as in-house lead in crisis communications situations, in cooperation with third-party consultants.
  • Represent the school and be an active participant in the community through membership in civic groups.

Events
  • Work with Events Manager to plan events used for promotion of the school for both internal and external audiences, including donor stewardship events and fundraising events.
  • Supervise Events Manager in production and implementation of CA’s SPEAK (Series for Parent Education About Kids) lecture program.

Management of Advancement Team
  • Hire, supervise, set direction, and support the goals for each member of the Advancement team.
  • Provide regular performance feedback, including annual performance appraisals, to support the professional growth and talents of each Advancement team member.
  • Create a supportive culture and environment that encourages inclusiveness, communication, and collaboration.

Head of School
  • Provide comprehensive and effective support for the Head of School.
  • Provide research, background information, appropriate materials, and recommended strategies for dealing with specific constituents and donors.
  • Work with the Head of School to implement the goals and vision for the institution. As a member of the administrative team, help develop priorities and strategies for the school.
  • Attend administrative meetings as needed.
  • Create materials for presentations to a variety of constituents, including faculty and staff, donors, Trustees, prospective families, etc.
  • Work closely with the Head of School on other tasks as assigned.

Board of Trustees
  • Represent Advancement with the CA Board of Trustees, including attendance at Board and Board committee meetings as needed.
  • Provide organizational and stewardship support for the Trustees.
  • Work with the Chair of the Board Development Committee to set fundraising agendas, provide data, and coordinate all fundraising efforts.

Parent Association
  • Serve as communications liaison to the Colorado Academy Parent Association (PA), providing communications support.
  • Field questions and inquiries from PA as it pertains to events and programs.

Community Partnerships
  • Oversee and assist in management of key community partnerships including through the Horizons Colorado program and the school’s REDI Lab program.
  • Attend Horizons Colorado meetings and other meetings, as necessary.
